Private Com pany H T H E First Montana won a reputation as a fighting reg iment that made the insurgents respect it. The fam e of the regim ent was not, however, confined to the enemy, but its fighting proclivities was recognized in United States arm y cir cles from one end of the country to the other. The boys from this state were even believed b y some of the regulars to be terribly ferocious. It is related that after the war had got well started a colored regim ent cam e to the islands. It had evidently heard of the M ontana boys as one of the darky soldiers met one of the members of the First one night in town. “ Say, Boss, w h a t regim ent do you belong to,” asked the colored man after an acquaintanceship had been struck up. “ I ’ m a mem ber of the First M ontana,” he replied. The colored man then moved aw a y a few paces and after looking the m a n over from head to foot he said: “ W h y , you don’t look so terrible wild and fierce after all. Say, boss, ain’t you m istaken? You don’ t really belong to them ‘Fighting M ontanas.’ ”
