M a jor Drer.nan was a true and tried soldier, a magnificent officer, a splendid citizen and a loveable c o m - panion. He was a veteran of the great civil w a r h a v i n g joined the E ighty- eighth New Y o rk volunteers in June, 1862, when little over 15 years of age. He served with his reg iment all through that conflict with credit. It seems as though this early experience of mili tary life was to leave its m a rk on his whole subse quent career. W ith in a year after the Eighty^eighth was mustered out he enlisted in the regular army, joining the Tw enty-second United States infantry in J » ly, 1866. He was soon promoted to the position of ser geant. His term o f enlistment expired in July, 1869, and he im mediately re-enlisted in the Ninth infantry ard soon after joining that regim ent he was given the three stripes of a non-com m issioned officer. He served in that capacity until June 1877, when he was made com m issary sergeant o f the Tw entieth cavalry. In 1884 he terminated his service at Fort Ellis near B o z e man. During the time he was in the regular arm y most of his life was spent in the west. He was with Generals Miles and M erritt in m a n y Indian cam p a igns. His last years of service in the regular arm y were seen at Fort Ellis, near Bozeman. He was com m is sary sergeant there, and it is related of him, that such confidence in his integrity and ability was reposed in him by the officers, that he not only kept the accounts * J CO.
