Handle this trunk gently, as you would touch her ,sad little history, for her father is in the second-class coach weeping; softly in a coarse cotton handkerchief, and she is going home on the same train—in, her cheap little coffin in the baggage car to meet her sorrowing mother who will go up into the attic many a rainy afternoon in' the days to come,, and. cry over the contents of-this poor-little trunk.and it. will .be a secret ...known .only to her sorrowing heart,' and „God.— Edgar Wilson Nye. •y-- -T ; K*' > ! \ For County Commissioner , • - . i-* ’ I wish to hereby announce m y s e lf a .eàn i};.; - didate fo r County Commissioner o f Fallon *‘ County, s u b je c t to the .will o f th e people \- / in the A u g u st p rim a ries. ^ • If nominated and e le cted I ' w l l l b o i d a a my p la tform o f a d m inistration ' *EquaHty‘ toward a ll, and “ E c o n o m y '' as f a r as-'p o * - >/'. 8ible w ithout m aking it a f a u l t . l am a.vi’ democrat hoping f o r y.our favorable' daei^--’ ’ sion. ’ i. FOR COUNTY TREASURER To the Voters of .Fallon County : I' hereby announce myself a can didate for the office of County Treasurer on the Democratic ticket at the August primaries. I have served the county as deputy treasurer under .Mr. Emil Lentz during - his term of office, and go before the voters on my record. E. H. TRANDUM. _ K t Wh- % Hi t e f e \ r BOOTJACKS AND BUGGY RIDING OBSOLETE. Bootjacks and buggy riding have long since become obsolete. The one since the advent of the sensible low cut shoes; the other an antiquated form of amusement since automobiling becanxe- a fad; ?•- -Seldom..now do. we see the old family horse and buggy, or the sprightly livery team. Renting livery rigs is now a small part of the'bsinesslarthe city ¡stables. In the old-days commercial travelers made the inland towns with livery rigs. Now they go by auto, or wait for the roads to dry up. = The Ford car, the Overland, the Chevrolet, especially these cheaper cars, have wrought the change. - They have been un- chnscipus;: angels of mercy to. hundreds of thousands of ill-treated and over-driven livery stable horses, as every liveryman knows who has ever had his best team brought in half dead from exhaustion. it is safe to assert that half the automobiles in use today are used for “joy’’’ riding: “ To bear out this-statement-we p o in O a . the fact that over eighty-three percent o f the transportation o f the country is still done by Horses. It'is also true that but «for our horses we should starve to death. Imagine those farmers hauling their wheat to market with automobiles, under present conditions. Yet, when we hear of road improvements, great international and state highways, it is the automobile and not the horse that is considered. DOUSMAN FOR ATTORNEY. To the‘^Voter's of Fallon County: Having served this County in the capacity-of' Coun ty.TTVct orney 'f o r 'the past twp years, 1 hereby announce, myself- a~cahdidate—fo r —^re-election' on the Democratic ticket. I believe the -experience I have gained\ in-this - office -the past-tw o years will enable, me to render more capable service than I could without such experience.’ I also believe it will enable me to render better serv- ice than a new man in the office. Very truly yours, . ' CHARLES_DO.USMAN. St.'_ y-:, Ñ' : FAIR TIME NOT FAR OFF. 7 i f Fallon County is 7b~Kave a display\a1Tthe state fair next fall; it is none too soon to give the matter attention. Last year, through an appropriation by the county, a creditable collection of grains and .other products was obtained. The exhibit was first shown at the county fair at Ekalaka and later taken-over - to Helena. Samples of sheaf grain are already being sent in to the real r estate» offices and some method shpuld be taken to get the farmers interested so theY will continue to gather and save them. 0 ^ There are a number of vegetables that even-now could be put up in jars by using preserving formulas. W e are reminded also that strawberries will soon be ripe. One of our most enterprising real estate ijien, L. C. Burns, has' a very fine“display whiclrwould make-an-attractive-addition tO- Fallon County’s booth at the fair. CARRANZA’S TONE DEFIANT ! There may be a change for the better in th’e Mexican situation before these lines reach our readers, but at the time they are written it 'looks like war. J President Wilson has made it plain that he will not countenance a-jwar with Mexico except as a last resort. He o f course favors mediation, but in the case of these border outrages' they will'have'to: bej met on the spot. ; (Carranza is standing pat on the proposition that American troops ; mjist not cross the border, and his reply to thfe note demanding ¿an .explanation of his purposes, as indicated-by preliminary reports, I p ' - . . is^one of defiance and is far from being conciliatory in tone. The longer Carranza staves off his reply -to the American note, ^ t h e worse it will be for him, as this country is. given that much more time in which to make its preparation for whatever may happen. ¿s'- . ‘ Mu v & PREPARING TO LICK THE TAR OUT OF MEXICAN GREASERS 0 :’h ¡brv'í' - '/T w o well known men of Ekalaka, DrVj.
