Photo bi Javan KesIngur A blue heron recently searched for food in a creek near Baker. Blue heron are the largest heron in North America and are a fairly common permanent resident in Montana, with more than 100 nesting colonies scattered across the state. Num- bers are greatly reduced in winter, especially on the plains north of Lewistown and east of Billings. Red Butte Ramblers 4-H meeting Submitted by Emily Shumaker, reporter The seventh meeting of the Red Butte Ramblers 4-H Club was called to order by presi- dent Nicole Allerdings at the Plevna Senior Center April 15 at 3 p.m. The American pledge was led by Wyat Rudi- cel and the 4-11 pledge was led by Daylee Hanson. Roll call was answered with some- where in America you would like to visit. There were 20 members present. Secretary Emily Shumaker read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved as read. Caleb Plocger read the treasurer's report. For old business, Carol Sparks discussed with the club about working on road signs and putting them up. President Nicole Allerdings asked if any of the members attended the Kids and Horses meeting Mar. 30. None of the members attended. Nicole also asked if any of the mem- bers attended the livestock committee meeting Apr. 8 - none attended. President Allerdings also reminded everyone that all members need to do a demonstration or an illustrative talk to finish their 4-H year. For new business, they dis- cussed ideas for a club tour. President Nicole Allerdings told the club that Apr. 15 there was a Council meeting at 7 p.m. Members were also re- minded that on Apr. 19 spring livestock judging will be at Baker. Apr. 24 registrations for OREO trip are due, which this year is in Fort Peck, June 16-18. Nicole Allerdings also asked if anyone would be at- tending the horse judging May 5. May 8 registrations for 4-H camp in Ekalaka June 9-11 are due to the Extension Office. The club discussed Communications Day in June and is hosted by the ambassa- dors. June 2-3, Temple Grandin is in our area giving a presentation, which quali- fies as Market Assurance re- quirement. This will also be very informative in general. The next meeting will be May 21 at 3 p.m. Demonstra- tions will be first. When the Baker students arrive, the club will clean the highway, fol- lowed by the meeting and a family potluck. Governor Bullock signs Bully Free Montana Act into law Helena - Governor Steve Bullock was joined by Su- perintendent of Public In- struction Denise Juneau, Rap. Kimberly Dudik, and students April 21 as he signed the Bully Free Montana Act into law at Jefferson School. The law directs local school dis- tricts to develop a process that students and families can follow to report and address bullying in their schools. \As a father, I believe that when students enter the classroom, it should be a safe and supportive envi- ronment where they can focus on learning, without fear of bullying,\ Bullock said of the law. \Montana has finally joined the rest of our nation in recogniz- ing that this is an issue that must be addressed.\ Efforts to pass a bullying prevention law began in 2005, but have thus far been unsuccessful. While he served as Attorney Gen- eral, Bullock and Juneau worked together to support similar legislation. With the passage of this law. Montana is the final state to put into law bullying i i prevention legislation. \I appreciate that the leg- islature passed the Bully Free Montana Act. Every child deserves to feel se- cure, valued, and sur- rounded by adults they trust at school,\ said Su- perintendent Denise Juneau. \A positive school climate is the foundation to a quality learning environ- ment. This law moves us in that direction.\ Under the Bully Free face bullying have a place to turn and a process to fix the problem.\ Nearly 70 percent of Montana third graders in- dicated they believe that bullying is a problem in their schools.
