Only movie night of Area students the summer will be this weekend named to dean's list By Lori Kesinger The only opportunity to see a movie on a big screen lo- cally this summer will be this Saturday, June 6, at the Longfellow Gymnasium. The Fallon County Recre- ation Department is hosting another family movie night to give families an opportu- nity to do something together in Baker. The movie being shown is \Jupiter Ascending\ rated P0-13. Mile Kunis stars as a Chicago maid (named Jupiter, natch) who is unwit- tingly swept into an inter- galactic power struggle when it's discovered she possesses royal DNA. With the help of a mutant bounty hunter (Channing Tatum), Jupiter must figure out where she City takes next belongs and determine the fate of Earth. The movie will start at 7 p.m. and concessions will be available. There is no charge to attend, but children ages 12 and under must be accom- panied by an adult. Due to summer mainte- nance at the school, the gym- nasium will not be available again until school starts. step on urban renewal district By Lori Kesinger The City of Baker is moving forward with the concept of creating an Urban Renewal District (URD) without in- creasing property taxes. The Eastern Montana Economic Development Authority (EMEDA) presented the idea to the City Council earlier this year. The City Council agreed to a feasibility study that exam- ined the possibility more closely. It was determined the City would benefit from the creation of an URD. EMEDA will apply for planning grants to continue with the process. Grant sub- missions close mid -summer and will be awarded later this year. \A plan will be helpful for the municipality to set priori- ties for projects and needs to address blight,\ said Mona Madler, EMEDA/SMART Director. \It will help us pri- oritize and implement the dis- trict.\ An Urban Renewal District is a program authorized by the statutes of the State of Mon- tana. It is intended to assist communities in improving and redeveloping \blighted\ areas. The program provides critical funding for planning, policy changes, and public in- frastructure such as land ac- quisition, demolition and removal of structures and gen- eral redevelopment activities. The URD sets up a speck' I taxation district to essent ial revitalize an area. The lases gained from the increase of property values over time within the district are redi- rected to the URD fund. Prop- erty taxes for residents inside and outside the URD remain the same. What changes is how those tax revenues are al- located to the different dis- tricts. \The URD is a way to con- tinue with the priorities brought forth at the vision meetings held several years ago,\ Madler said earlier this year. \It is also based on the information the MSU Com- munity Design Center gave to us last summer.\ Patterson graduates from Briar Cliff University in Iowa Thomas G. l'atterson gradu- ated from Briar Cliff Univer- sity during commencement ceremonies in Sioux City, Iowa, May 18, with a bachelor of science major in criminal justice with a minor in psy- chology and a certificate to coach wrestling. Toni was Coach Joe Privetere's first recruit four years ago with a scholarship to Briar Cliff. His parents, Walter and Joene (Olind) Patterson of Frost- burg, MD; his grandparents.
