When the Baker City Council met Jan. 4, officials were sworn in by City Attorney Russell Culver. Officials sworn in were Anna Straub, City Judge; JoDee Pratt and Rod Morris, councilpersons; and Clayton Hornung, mayor. ... Fallon County's first baby of 2006 was Anthony James Fradenburgh. He was born Jan. 4 at 7:39 a.m. He is the son of Anthony Fradenburgh and Andrea Quintanilla of Baker. . . High temperature Jan. 9 was 52 degrees.. . Sue Nelson of Baker was the first place winner in Water Color Painting at the Billings Art As- sociation Juried Show... Ping and Gloria Askin and Cliff and Ruth DuCharme will celebrate their 50th wedding anniver- saries Jan. 15... At the Janu- ary 5 Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture meeting, new officers were elected. They are: Pat Ehret, president; Karol Zachmann, first vice president; Mike Griffith, sec- ond vice president; and Merri Beck and Anna Griffith, direc- tors. Pastor David Olson of the American Lutheran Church will deliver the message. 30 YEARS AGO Thursday, January 9,1986 - The local Beef Cook -Off, sponsored by the Baker Cow - Belles, was held recently at Baker high School. Thomasene Stieg took first place, Cindy Tronstad second and Brigitte Ferrel third. Judges for the event were Georgia Hansen, Clarence Schell and Ella Aniell... Out- going mayor Fred Williams is pictured passing on the re- sponsibility of the city to the new mayor, J.D. Kyle, through a handshake. City Council members are Walt Ehman, Bill Bohle, Tom McGonigal, and Richard Schueler.. . New of- ficers to be installed at the an- nual Chamber of Commerce banquet are Gerry Gamrath, president; Duane Quenzer, president-elect; Marilyn Askin, vice president; Barcia Samsel, treasurer; Alice An- derson, secretary; Larry Mer- win, Gordon Heimbuch, Maranda Fuchs, Harold Jensen, and Dale Boggs are directors... With the combination of snow and wind that has hit our area already this winter, the road crews have been busy trying to keep roads clear. Some days this has not been possible, and the roads have been closed off and on in the past two weeks. 40 YEARS AGO Thursday, January 8,1976- A recent article of the early spring -like weather lasted only long enough to get the story to press. Last week's weather produced six and one-half inches of snow in the Baker area with sub -zero tempera- tures, strong winds, drifting and in general, blizzard condi- tions. . . The Chamber of Commerce is in the process of preparing a new brochure about Fallon County. Esther Leutkens is at her desk on her last day of work for the Montana -Dakota Utilities Company after 33 years of service. . . Mr. and Mrs. Herb Varner were hon- ored on their 25th wedding an- niversary at an open house given by their children at the American Lutheran Church. 50 YEARS AGO Thursday, January 13, 1966 - The revenue bond issue for the sewage lagoon will be up for the voters Jan. 17. . . Baker school enrollment as of Jan. 11 in grades kindergarten through twelve topped the Baker all time high which was recorded in the school year 1963-64 when there were 1051 stu- dents... Fallon Post No. 35 of the American Legion held their annual meeting Monday night. Speaker was Senator Gene Huntley. . . Rev. John Hanrahan showed slides of Ireland to the Baker Lions Club at their meeting Monday night at Grainger's Hall. C.H. Doppler, vice president; Rex Flint, second vice president; L. Price, treas- urer; and W.L. Riddle, secre- tary. . . On and after Jan. 2, boards will no longer issue ra- tion books. Starting that date just the food ration books will be handled by the board. . . Fred Quenzer, who was sta- tioned in the Philippines for nine months, has been visiting relatives in Plevna for the past week. He plans to work in Billings. 80 YEARS AGO Thursday, January 9, 1936 - The first meeting of the Fallon County Fair Board was held Jan. 8 with president Larry Burns presiding. Other mem- bers were L. Price, Homer French. and FE. Bruggeman.. W.G. Melton of Lewistown, one of the oil operators devel- oping the Winnett oilfield, is in Baker this week looking over operations of MDU. . L.E. Baker, proprietor of the Baker Hotel and Cafe, was no- tified Tuesday from the Post- master General's Office, Washington, D.C., that he has been appointed to take over the duties as postmaster in Baker. He succeeds R.E. Mor- ris. . . L.E. Rushton elected president of the Commercial Club at annual meeting. 90 YEARS AGO Thursday, Januar 14, 1926 - Stockholders of the Fallon County Farm Loan Associa- tion held their meeting at the office of secretary R.W. Rus- sell Jan. 12. Messers Ames, Finch, Griffith, Bergstrom, McGinnis. Rogers and Sher- win were elected directors... Clerk of Court Keener is busy with the jury list for the next term of court... A.E. Munroe has purchased the Alheiser house near the courthouse and is having it remodeled. . . George Ferrel and Ruben Haven were in from Cabin Creek Tuesday after supplies. Patchwork Quilt Guild Submitted by Joan Granunond The Patchwork Quilt Guild met Dec. 8 at Thee Garage with six members present. The project for the day was a wreath made with fabric leaves in fall or Christmas col- ors. The results were beautiful. The manner in which the leaves were sewed determined the finished look. This was also their Christmas party. The Guild will meet Jan. 12 at Thee Garage at 10 a.m. Please bring ideas for future projects. We will have election of officers. New members are welcome. Fire news The Baker Fire Department responded to two separate fires last month. December 8, a call came in at 5:30 p.m. from a southeast Baker rural residence. An electrical malfunction caused a small shed to ignite which then spread to a nearby haystack burning it to the ground. The following week, De- cember 17, the BFD received a call at 2:00 a.m. from a home on the 400 block of First Street West. The home was filled with smoke and a faulty fur- nace motor was discovered to be the culprit.
