The am- phitheater was dedicated to the late Roger Schmidt. A large plaque, donated by Wells Fargo, will be placed on the building naming it the Roger Schmidt Amphitheater... Fal- lon County Times readers will see several changes in their newspaper beginning the first of August. It is being re- designed to make it easier to read and a smaller page size is going to be used to make it easier to handle and increase the number of pages in each issue. . . Country music star Josh \Ibmer has been booked for the Saturday night show during the Fallon County Fair. ... Lawrence Goroski will cel- ebrate his 91st birthday July 23. . . Arlis Schaefer was the winner of a char -broil gas grill from Reynolds Market. . . Baker Volunteer firefighters were very busy the first eleven days of July. Fire Chief Randy Hoenke said they had been called out 14 or 15 times over that period. . . Approximately 925 people enjoyed the annual Cedar Creek Anticline ham- burger feed July 14, despite the hot temperature of 104 de- grees. . . District 12 School Board hired Val Johnson to head a new masters reading program in the elementary grades. . . Trendline Vermeer of Baker, owned by Greg and Judy Gunderson, has received the coveted \Vermeer Mas- ters\ award from Vermeer Manufacturing Co. 20 YEARS AGO Friday, July 19, 1996 -- Baseball fans turned out in full force last weekend to fill the stands as six teams went head to head in the District III Babe Ruth All -Star Tournament held in Baker. Curt Huether threw out the first pitch of the tournament. Miles City went on to win the tourney. . . A 50th wedding anniversary open house will be held July 28 for Jerry and Betty Smeltzer. . . The family of Olivia Fuchs Huether invites you to celebrate her 80th birth- day July 27. . . Eight Senior Webelos recently went camp- ing at the K -M South Camp near Hilger along with their leaders Teresa Christensen and David Gustafson. Boys from Baker at the camp were James Benedict, Edward Bergin, Wyet Christensen, Kyle Fradenburgh, Jonathan Gustafson, Chase Hayden, John Knapp and Pat Root. 30 YEARS AGO Thursday, July 17, 1986 -- Volunteers are busy construct- ing the softball complex con- cession stand. The building will also include bathrooms and storage for supplies. Pic- tured are Wayne Mangold, Kregg Flint, Don Dilworth, Dave Blake, Doug Vamer, and Larry Niemerg. Earl Collins is doing the cement work... For the second year in a row, Jim Anderson has won the state trap shooting title. From a pos- sible score of 200 broken clay targets, he broke all of them to claim a perfect score. . . Tues- day the Fire Dept. received a call that a severe electrical storm caused a fire at the Vern Stark place. The fire burned 2000 square bales and some round bales - about 60 tons of hay. . . Mr. Richard Menger, biology teacher at Baker High School, has been chosen to re- ceive this year's Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for the State of Montana. . . Baker baseball players on the State - line all -Stars team this year are Ryan Pool, Chad Shepherd, Shawn Rost, Troy O'Connor. and Greg Btritbach. 40 YEARS AGO Thursday, July 15, 1976 -- Business ran smoothly at last week's city council meeting when Herb Vamer assumed the reins of power. Varner was named mayor at a special meeting June 30 following the death of Mayor Walt Kreager. Also at the special meeting, three names were put into con- sideration for Varner's Ward I alderman spot - Jerry Smeltzer, Martin Setinc and Rick Reid. Smeltzer was ap- pointed. . . Five Baker youth placed in the Little Britches Rodeo held in Rhame this weekend. In the Junior Divi- sion, Joyce Ferrel won the All- Around Cowgirl, Teresa Rustad won the runner-up po- sition. Gary Eichhorn won the All -Around Cowboy, Forst Eichhorn was the runner-up for the All -Around trophy, and Brent Cundall placed third in the steer riding...Wang Feeds west of Baker was the only major victim of the high winds that moved into the Baker area last Friday night. One bin was turned on its side, another arm was on top of the building but fell under the stress of the wind, taking drop pipes lead- ing to grain storage areas with it. . . Baker Babe Ruth team, under the coaching of Herb McCamish, listed Wade Ja- cobsen and Dale McCamish as the big hitters for the Baker team. Six Baker boys made the All Star team - Terry Gill, Shane Farstveet, Lester Straub, Wade Jacobsen, Dale McCamish and Scott Townsend. 50 YEARS AGO Thursday, July 21, 1966. Ernest Switzer of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spent Monday in Baker with Robert Morton. Fallon County Civil Defense director, in- specting possible fallout shel- ters. . . Three drought stricken Montana counties - Wibaux, Dawson, and Fallon - were designated as disaster areas Saturday by President Eisenhower...Word reached Baker Tuesday that Shell Oil Company was mak- ing plans to install a process- ing plant in the Pine Unit and Cabin Creek oilfields. 70 YEARS AGO Thursday, July 18, 1946 -- A deal was consummated last week whereby Jack Ballard sold his hog yard to George Severson, manager of the Fal- lon -Carter Livestock Assn. . . The Baker Lake has never been more popular than it is this season and this is due largely to the swimming classes conducted by lifeguard Ray Eggen and the increased facilities for the public. A div- ing tower has been built, benches set up, the lake cleaned and other incidental necessities under the direction of Al Eckes and the Commer- cial Club. 80 YEARS AGO Thursday, July 23, 1936 -- Water conservation, that rosy dream of the drought stricken farmer, is becoming an actual- ity in Fallon County, and a drive two miles west of Baker will show a horde of men and horses working under the hot sun scraping away sagebrush and all other vegetation in pre- liminary prepaiation for the construction of the half mile dam to be called the Red -Butte Deep Creek project. . . A crowd of Baker people drove out to Little Beaver swimming hole on the Emerson ranch Sunday to watch Major Al Halvorson put on a diving demonstration. This is the most popular resort in the county this summer. 90 YEARS AGO Thursday, July 22, 1926 -- Gas will be piped from the Cabin Creek field to Miles City and construction of the pipeline will start immedi- ately. . . Eph Keirle has re- sumed management of his business after a six month ab- sence. Iver Hyland, who has been in charge during the owner's absence, will still be connected with the firm. . .
