FAA,L0 County LJ fctimesgmidrivers.com 406-778-3344 VOLUME 100 ISSUE 33 BAKER, MONTANA 59313 -6 $1.00 FRIDAY, AUGUST 12,2016 Bullock announces funding to rebuild community Governor Steve Bullock today announced that Federal Emer- gency Management Agency (FEMA) funding has been made available to the State of Montana to support recovery efforts of Fallon County in the aftermath of a severe tornado on June 11,2016. \The community of Baker can nosy get back on their feet and rebuild to become stronger and create more opportunities for future economic growth and job creation,\ said Governor Bul- lock. On June II , the Ciosertior executed the State Emergency Management Plan with the activation of the State Emergency Coordination Center to a level three. A state disaster declaration was declared on July 18, 2016, with an effective date of June 9,2016, for Fallon County, A Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) was re- quested on July 1,2016, and conducted from July 13 to July 14, 2016. The costs of responding to the storm exceeded the capability of the State of Montana. on July 20, Gov color Bullock requested I.ENIA evaluate the devastating effects of the tornado and affirm the area as a major disaster eligible for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration. Tina, married to native Jeremy Rost, has lived in Baker thirteen years. The couple met at a wedding in Baker the summer of 2000. They were married in St. Cloud, MN a few months later. They made their home in Holland, MI where Jet cm) k% as employed by R -Line Trucking. The new- lyweds moved to Baker in 2003. Rost is returning to work after spending the past thirteen years raising her children: Will. thirteen and Zander who is ten. Tina was raised in St. Cloud. After graduating from high school she attended St. Cloud Tech majoring in secretarial. Among her career experiences she had been employed at the St. Cloud Times newspaper. The St. Cloud Times has been central Minnesota's news leader for over 150 years. The newspaper also printed the USA Today newspaper. Rost received a well-rounded edu- cation in the field of newspaper media. She began her job as the assistant to the production manager. She later branched out into other areas of newspaper production. She gleaned experience in the newsroom, assisting the editor and in the graphics department. Rost enjoys reading, spending time with her family and an occasional trip to MN to visit her mom, dad and sister. She is happy that her kids have the opportunity to get to know their grandparents and relatives in Baker. 2016 Teacher's roll call By Sherry Vogel New to the Baker School District this year will be Amanda Sikorski Tunby. Amanda will be replacing Patti Morris as a first grade teacher. Morris will teach the title class, replacing Mrs. McPhee who retired this past spring. Amanda, a Baker graduate - Class of 1986, was raised on a ranch 24 miles south of Baker. When she was a child, she enjoyed playing school with her sister. Kristi. She stated, \I was always the teacher and my sister was always the stu- dent.\ After graduation, Tunby attended Montana State Univer- sity in Bozeman where she received her Bachelors of Sci- ence in Elementary education. Although Tunby is new to the Lincoln School this fall, she is not new to teaching. She has been employed in Plevna for the past twenty-five years. She has taught first, fourth. fifth and sixth grades. During her years in Plevna Tunby participated in the tech - nology grants. She became a technology integration special- ist. She was also instrumental in setting -up and implementing the Response to Intervention program. This program is designed to identify at risk students before they fall behind in their academic studies. Tunby stated. \I thought it was an important program to have. It caught kids AMANDA TUNBY that were missing concepts. It gave them the opportu- nity to catch-up with their class- mates.\ Tunby emphasizes reading in her class- room. She states that It promotes not only reading. but fosters writing and having a voice.\ Tunby looks for- ward to the new school year. She likes teaching the first grade because first graders want to be there. \They are eager to learn and to please.\ She added, \They make me laugh every day.\ Amanda and her husband Randy reside on a farm 25 miles north of Baker. They will be empty nesting this fall, when son Zane leaves to study Animal Science at Sheridan Col- lege. Tunby's daughter. Abigail. is following in her mom's footsteps. She is pursuing an Elementary Education degree and is completing her student teaching in Bozeman this fall. Jennifer Dukart is excited to be teach- ing kindergarten in her hometown of Baker, this fall. Dukart the prior Jennifer Myhre was raised on the Myhre family farm 14 miles south of Baker. She gradu- ated from Baker High School in 1982. She went on JENNIFER DUKART o receive her Bache- lors ot Science in Elementary Education at Dickinson State College. Jennifer later went on to receive her Early Child- hood endorsement. She is currently pursuing a master's de- gree in special education. The first year after receiving her degree Dukart taught first grade in Buffalo, SD. She later accepted the position of Ed- ucation Coordinator at Home on the Range for Boys in Beach, ND. Then after having children, she became a sub- stitute teacher in Wibaux and Baker. These past four years she taught full time, preschool though first grade, in a self -contained classroom in the Mar- marth Public School District. She looks forward to teaching just kindergarten as compared to teaching two grades at a time. Dukart said, \I chose education as my profession as I've always enjoyed working with kids.\ She finds accomplish- ment in the moment a student starts to read. \I enjoy being involv ed in the young child's first reading experience. I'm enthusiastic about my students finding the joys ot reading books. It's a fun and exciting age to work with.\ She also feels it is important to keep a student's parents informed and involved in their .1old's education. Jennifer welcomes the opportunity to visit with parents. \I see us as a team,\ she said. Jennifer is married to Kevin Dukart. City Clerk and Treas- urer. They have three children. Cadet] is a junior at MSU majoring in Agricultural Relations. INviris.Tannon and Tay- lyn, are juniors this year at Baker High School. TAKE NOTE ...
