The Basin Progress, first published by H. L. Hughes, was a Republican newspaper that sometimes called itself the “official paper of Jefferson County.” It started in 1896 and became The Basin Progress and Mining Review beginning in 1904. Throughout its run, it focused on mining news in the “Cataract country” and often promoted the town of Basin and Jefferson County. The publishers suspended publication of The Basin Progress and Mining Review in 1909, saying that “the move is made necessary from the fact that the business is not paying and that there is not money enough taken in to pay the living expenses of one man.”
