Regarding the death of John Roach, the Inter -Mountain very pertinently remarks,. in - the way of a partial biography of the man that \a noble life went out when John oaeh died at his home in New York this morning. His career should be read up and studied and digested by every boy in America. More than half a century ago he landed in New York a penniless stripling from Scotland. From that time on be never took a step backward. He has been the Nestor of American shipbuilding, and though ruined financially by the unwarranted per- secutions and merciless exaetions of the present Secretary of the Navy, in his intemperate zeal to make a reform record for the Cleveland ad- ministration, the fame of John Roach is as unsullied now as when first the Dolphin was rejected by Whitney, without sense or reason. Roach has probably been the most abused man that ever took a government con- tract, but the Democratic mud hurled at him faild to tarnish his character and he stood forth at -all times a distinguished type of the Amriean mechanic, crowned with the laurels of success and rich in the con- fidence and respect of all who knew him. He -was particularly the friend of workingmen, paying higher wages and treating his employes with more consideration than is customary among men carrying such a :weight of .responsibility and having such an army of subordinates. His death is particularly sad, and recalls in want - respects that of Genf! Grant, be- tween wl-a*e charactei\aaal his own there are many aimileritiea. Like Grant he was sturdy, self-reliant and .poaitive, had overcome obstacles which would have appalled almost any other man, and arose from the humblest walks of life taleminence. Like Grant his later years were em- bittered by financial misfortune and lie is carried off by an - incurable dis- ease aggraitated no doubt, as , was that of the great Union .Captein, by the in alignant persecution of his eneinis. \Secretary Whitney ought to drape the Navy Departtnent in mourning to -day as a token of the nation's sor- row at the loss of the man who built its staunchest ships, and sayed, our mercantile marine from the contempt of the world ; but Whitney is more likely to give a halt tonight than to half-rhast the national flag.\ case last .Monday. one of the residents of =Elkhorn had tired of that snow a clad region and longed to look on the orange and fig graeses of the a sunny south. Not hay- ing a siipeatibuntlance of inetalie sub- stance wherewith to - make a journey such magnitude and pay his just debts, he conceived the scheme of fleeing from his creditors, saving his golden ducats that he might spend them foi the goaerous wine of the tropais: To carry out his plan he drew his pay from the Elkhorn com- pany one evening, and long before the hour the bird named in Holy Writ We/aimed the approach of the com- ing morn, he bid adieu to the town, and rapidly wending'- his way in the direction of Boulder. After . a time be became thirsty (no wonder for he had forgotten to take his usual cup of coffee) and espying a saloon by the wayside he entered therein and poured spirits down to keep up his courage. While thus engaged he was starpriaed by a couple of his cred- itors who had \smelt a Mice\ aall followed him. • Refusing to settle he came on to Boulder, and was soon afterwards iii the •hands of officer Lindsey, on the chargeofleaving the -territory for the purpose of defrauding his creditors. On Monday he made an application for discharge from arrest, but this was denied. Not wishing to Spent! the night in the county hotel - he edmpromised with , his creditors, paid the costs of suit, and went on his way fully convinced that \the way of the transgressor is hard.\ , COURT ZiOTEal. J.,has considerably changed our views, and especially our prejudices in regard to what are 5 enerally known as \Standard Patent Medicines.\ Of course we are getting to that age in life when we are forced to conclude Life itself is a humbug, and naturally distrust anything that has not withstood long and tried ex- periences. Being s physician I had the curiosity to know how such a sale of two medical preparations could be sustatned for so many years. The perfect systf.m wpon which the business is conducted, and the pharmaceutical arrangements for the manufacture of the two recipes with which we were made acquainted, are suf- ficiently convincing to us that the Auoutia FLOWER, for Dyspepsia and Liver Com- plaints, and Boscaticas GERMAN SYRUP, for Throat and Lung Troubles, were for the coinplaints they are recommended, most e cellent remedies, and only regret that in notch of our practice, medical eth- ics prevent us from prescribing them without making the formulas public. When we were shown the great quantity of voluntary letturs having been for- warded Dr. Green, front all parts of the country, and from ' all classes of people, lawyers, ministers and doctors, giving a description of their ailments. testimonials of their eures, etc., X feel like curial:sang Dr. Green's suggestion that the Govern meat accept such Valuable formulas, and license them earigeeeral use by 'giving protection to the inventor same as patents generally. --Copied from N.
