More about this newspaper

Boulder became the county seat of Jefferson County in 1883, and the town experienced quite a bit of newspaper activity through the first decade of the twentieth century. Sam Robertson started publication of the Jefferson County Sentinel on August 14, 1885. The paper billed itself as the “the pioneer newspaper of Jefferson County” and covered local happenings, with an emphasis on mining and other local industries. By the middle of 1899, it became The Sentinel and aimed to be “a little more cosmopolitan” in its makeup in the future. C. B. Robertson took over as publisher in 1900 and oversaw the remainder of its run through 1904. Another newspaper in Boulder, The Age, started publication on March 21, 1888. Will Kennedy was the first publisher, and F. E. Cornish became publisher in 1895. At its launch, The Age promised to be independent and represent every part of Jefferson County. On January 1, 1905, Robertson and Cornish created the Boulder Publishing Company and, citing slow growth in Boulder, merged The Sentinel and The Age into The Age Sentinel. Just over two years later, on September 14, 1907, C. E. Trescott published the first issue of The Boulder Monitor, announcing it as a Republican paper. Due to financial struggles, The Age Sentinel sold out to the Monitor in late-1907. The two papers briefly published together, but then continued to publish separately until The Age Sentinel ended in 1909. The Boulder Monitor remains Boulder’s weekly newspaper, primarily covering local community and business news.
