The Basin Progress comes out good and strong against gambling In that town. The attitude of the paper ap- pears to be a reflection of the senti- ment among the business men of that community, and the argument ts that it would not be so bad It there were a little gambling among the lo- cal devotees of the game, but the trouble is that about pay.day there arrives from Butte a bunch of gamb- lers with the sole purpose of opening their games for a few days while the working men about Basin have their month's pay In their pockets, to se- cure this money in plying their 01 games and then travel back to Butte. The attitude of the mer- chants toward the matter is largely a protective one and not based alto- gether on moral grounds. They re- alize that with open gambling the Op- portunities and the temptations fur certain men are so great that they lose in gambling the money that they have worked hard for, and in thus losing it are unable to meet their ac- counts at the stores, -money that should go for the support and the necessaries fur the awn and those de- pendent upon them, if they have such, is wasted at the gaming table, and the worst 9f all, under the conditions that have prevailed, Is taken over to Butte. She yet in jail on the charge of bigamy and it looks as though she expected to get clear ou the showing that she is if not insane at least an ir- responsible person. It was hard to shake her last husband ' s faith in her, but as a test he went to the jail with Melville, remained concealed while Melville called on theyoung woman who had denied the marriage and said that he was only \ UncleUeorge, \ but Ole showed demonstrations of affec- tion that \ soured \ Northey and now be isn ' t going to try to get her out of jail. When Northey disclosed that he saw her kiss Melville she promptly denied it and fell in a swoon; later she took bug poison iu till apparent effort to end her life but Melville says that is an old game and only a bluff. She was arraigned in court a few days ago on the charge of bigamy, and pleaded not guilty.
