While there one of their . children, ia little boy,) died. Through a kindness I had done the tribe I was permitted to take the body. 'Having had considerable ex- perienee in the taxidermic art, I wan enabled to poise the body while yet Warm in an easy and graceful attitude of prayer. After bathing the body in a solution necessary to induce petres- cence, I placed it away in my rude laboratory and patiently awaited the result.. No mother ever watched her first born with greater solicitude than I watched my bantling. Accretion set in favorably at oneè, and, I am ! proud to say; that it is the finest specimen of petrifaction ever found or produced. I have 'nearly accom- plished my mission and - will soon -be ready to go back to Germany. - In reciting this strange story I dol not pretend to give the professor's exact language. but the substance of what he said. THE MAN most seriously hurt by the recent campaign is Lord Sackville West, the English Minister at Wash- ington. who in an unguarded moment, replied to a letter asking how it was best for an Englishman who had' be- come a naturalized American citizen to vote. The question and answer were both supposed to be confidential, but the question was a trap for politi- made on the canals of the planet Mars by M. Fizeau. The various dream - stances connected with these appear - as lately decribed by M. Per - rotin and Sehairpairelli. suggest a strong analogy with certain phenome- na of glaciation -parallel ridges. cre- va.ssee. rectilinear fissures. often of great length and at various angles - observed in the regions of large gla- ciers in Switzerland and especially in Greenland. This leads to the hypoth- esis of a vast development of glacia- tion on the surface of Mare where ; the seasons being much longer and the temperature relatively lower. the MINING POINTS. Moutana, Mining Review. Helena.1 The following are well taken and ; can be relied upon as being absolutely I correct: When a location is illegal and void, the subsequent proceedings, even if • in due form, are invalid. Valid locution of a mining claim may be made whenever the prospec- to;has.discovered nuel indications of mineral that he is willing to spend his time and money in following them in the expeeiation of finding ore. It is not necessary to the validity of a claim that the discovery of min- eril .-Iould be made in the \discovery shaft.\ A discovery either within the shaft or m any other part of the surface ground within the limits of the claim is sufficient. There is no authority of law under which public lands may be leased by the government for mining purposes. Lapse of time short of the statute of limitations is alone no proof of _ . fbaedonmeet.._ The applicant few a mining patent may contract with any United State capacity than as claimant. A deputy , mineral surveyor cannot survey a claim and act as notary public in the same ease. • The procuring of an official survey of a mining elaiin is an exiMrie pro- ceeding, in which the claimant alone lit interested, and no one except - the claimant can have the right to appeal from the approval or disapproval of the survey. Placer claims within town site limita requiring the use of the surface, will defeat a townsite entry,,embrae- ing the seine tract. Towneite author- ities cannot interfere with placer mining on the publicland, the govern - nient policy being tõ foster mining. After a town site has been patented the land embraeed therein does not belong to the United States, even if the 'minerals do, and - no location of a mining claim can therefore be made. There is no authority of law for a -tunnel location 3,000 by 1,500 feet.. A proper location is the width of the tunnel itself for 3.000 feet. The requirements of location and notices of a proposed tunnel, apply only where blind leads are sought to be discovered. Where a party runs a tunnel develop a known lode, :greedy discovered and located notice of - such intention is not required, end - a tunnel location need not be made.
