THE HELENA PAPERS tell of a man named Curry falling down a shaft at the Peerless Jennie mine last Friday, death resulting instantly. The man, who was a new workman there, had just come up a shaft in a bucket, had stepped out of the bucket, and stepped into a second shaft, which is within a few feet of the first. and which was _ — entirely unguarded. In, tir% face of these facts the cereneelory attached . no blame to the company. And still there are some people who say that no law or mine inspeCtOr Is needed in Montana for the Protection of the lives and limbs of miners. THE APPORTIONMENT BOARD — WhiCh divided the Teri:itory into districts for the election of Delegates W. the Con- stitutional, Convention, failed to name the proper persons to whom the elec- tion returns should be sent in the case \if districts composed of parts of two counties. It is possible the general laws might cover the point and , the . older of the two comities be the one in which the official canvass of the votes should be made, but it would, be Well to have an official daelaratioti to this effect from, the Apportionineet Board.....—Especisdly-ntuarld tiiie bonds- visablc in the ease of districts ,eoni- posed of parts of two -counties but in-. eluding the county -seat of neither county, Hach as the district composed ef parts of • Jefftieson and . Silver Bow counties: Unless something e this character is done there is liable to be more or less confusion in connection with the election returns. ' THE MEDICAL BOARD. [Special Corresposidenee of THE A0e.1 HELENA, April 4.—In accordance with the provisions of the. Medical Bill 'pawed at the recent- session of the ‚Legislature, the Board met in Helena 4ril 2c1 and perfected their organization. . - In a neat and very complimentary speech Dr. E. D. Leavitt, of eu t • nominated .Dr. J. B.. Atchison for president, who was elected unani- mously. 'flux is deeerved'eomilliment to a worthy wan. Dr. Atellinon, as president, presided with dignity and fairness throughout the meetings of the Board. Dr. E. Cruteher, of Great. Falls, and Dr. F. S. Hedger, of Missoula, Were in turn elected Secre- tary and Treasurer respectively, both are popular and competent gentle- men. , Many diplomas were examined and certificates Ordered betted to the holders thereof. In several instances certificates were withheld till diploui- ati cord(' be procured, and tier Board had an opportunity to look up the standing 'of various colleges. Phesicians and surgeons who pos- sees diplomas from accredited medietal ethoola \are granted certificates, as provided in the act:- Those who pos- sess no diplomas, or whose diplomas are not from recognized schools or colleges, must appear for examination in tile various branches named in the law. From what we saw, we are con- vinced that the -- Board will act with fairness and jtestiee to all. Different schools of medicine are represented among the members, for which fact Governor Leslie deserves credit. .Sec- tarianism is not allowed, tinder any circumstances. The people should give the Board their 'hearty support in its endeavors to rid the territory of quacks and charlatans. It is for our benefit that the law was passed and we can rest assured that it will be enforced as far as the Board is concerned. If Coun- ty Attorneys will do their part the people of Montana will be protected. ' An adjourned session Will be held in Helena April 28th, at 8 p. m. This will 'be- the last meeting before the sixty -days limit expires. Physicians must secure certificates at this meet- ing. A fee of $15 is exacted from each practitioner. No 'one can prac- tice without this eertificat,a failure to secure one and a continuance in practice constitutes a misdemeanor, punishable with a fine not less than 8100 no more than $500.' Do4ors will do- well to bear this in mind, rti\ the law is very strict in its provisions. We would advise doctors, druggists, and those wile act as mid -wives to carefully study the law and thus avoid its violation. No one can ate, tend the sittk (performing the duties of a physician or Burgeon) in any capacity, without a certificate, except in eases of emergency. This is strict but it is law and it is right. A full list ortthose authorized to Practice will, no doubt, be soon pu9ished in the various counties of'.thiierritery: The physicians of Jefferson count would do well to attend the meeting ; of the Board April 18th, 1889,.: Drs. t Leavitt, Cruteher, Rinehart, w I efoot, Hedger Atchison; and a B n u li ll n a e r s. constitute hedger, - 14 0 tia le ir un t ‘ i . f ER E . x- NEWS FROM 'WIC ' KF;S. • • • 5 Correepoildence fluA Anal Wien A`pril 7.—There ve a social hop . at the 1.0. 0..14'. hall on the 4th hist.
