' e Northern Pacific Raroad Com- pany has returned for assessment in Jefferson county this year 205,247.77 aeres of land at a valuation of $88,- 555. 73. W. N. TenEyck and G. K. Rogers are building quite a ditch from the Boulder river above the Mouth of the canon. Considerable rock Work ha to be done, requiring More or less blasting. Decoration Day was observed in Boulder last Thursday by the closing of most of the mercantile houses and bank at noon and a game of base-ball in the afternoon. There Was also a little hop in the evening at Groesbeck & Simpkins hall. A couple of young men last week found a horse in Lite hills between Wickham's and Radersburg which •:; had a saddle turned ou him. They roped the hoyse and brought him to Mr. Wickham's ranch. The animal is a bay and lute a white eye. He is sup- posed tkilitiVe come rf - Unlicame7 rail- road camp. . The County ' Commissioners have been in session this week, most of the time being devoted te an examination of the county offices and the new Court house. The Board will be in session all week, to -day and to -morrow being devoted largely -to providing for the enforcement of the registration law enacted at the last session of the Leg- islature. The daily papers announce that a petition has been gotten up and will be presented to the Governor asking for the pardon of Wm. R. Harding, sent to the penitentiary from Jefferson county last fall for one year for killing his wife. Taking out his good service time, his term will ixpire in August, and the effort for his pardon is said to be for the purpose of restoring him to citizenship. • A COUNTÉR CHALLENGE. I noticed in the .issue of the Sentice/ of May 24th a ‘Challenge from Jack Rowell, ex -heavy -weight champion of Montana, to fight any man in Jeffer- son county, myself preferred. I make no pretension as a prize fighter, but will spar or box Mr. Rowell fifteen or twenty rounds or to a finish with four -ounce gloves, under R. K. Suitor, who has been a resident of Boulder . the past year, left last Fri- day for Helena. He has been quite popular in Boulder and will be missed by , the young ladies and gentlemen. Geo ' rge Platt was in from Butte last' Saturday, arranging for the patenting ' of the Montana Consolidated quartz lode claim in the Cataract district. George. is going to be a bonanza king one of these fine days.' • Z. Audet, Elkhorn; N. Terrell, Boston; W. A. Charron,, Quincy, Ill.; A. H. Adams, St. Paul; S. H. McIntire, Helena; John D. Pewell, Finley Roe, Jefferson City; C. B. Hutchinson, Elkhorn, were registered at the Grand Central tlpring the past week. Dr. A. R. Robertson has gone to Twin Bridges and Slteridan to operate on the masticating organs of the peo- ple of Madison county. He will not return Boulder until the 15th or 20th of the month, so everybody had better put off having the toothache until that time. Among the patrons of the Windsor House the past week were George Lambert, Placer; A. H. Moulton, Jef- ferson City; A. Macomber, ' Raders- burg; H. Goodwin, Fred Root, White- hall; J. McCluskey, H. Wellbrimk, J. Gallagher, Gregory; A. McConnell and Mike Gannon, Helena. J. J. Kerr, the lawyer who former- ly resided here and whom household goods recently came here from St. Louis, is expected here with his fam- ily about the first of 'August and will take up his permanent residence here. He owps the house where W. H. Concannon lives and will occupy that house. - John O'Neil, of Deer Lodge, was in Boulder last Saturday and while in t - twit called - at THE AGE office and sub- scribed for a year. Mr. O'Neil is man- ager of the Central Park \ picnic resort on the Montana Central near Calvin's and he is running it in good shape and hopes to make it,a profitable in- stitution, as doubtless he will. He says the next improvement will be à lake on which will be put a little steam- er. MINING NEWS. The Amazon works are to resume operations to -day. Work has been fully resumed a(the mine and mill of the Elkhorn. Mining Company. Wm..Berkin shipped a carload of ore to the East Helena smelter the past week. Four bars of bullion from the Holler mine came down last Wednesday for shipment east. - J. W. Russell, of Wickes, this week bonded the Swiggett interests in the Garfield, Dunderberg, and other claims in the Cataract district. He bonded the other interests some weeks since, and this gives him control of the en- tire property.. The third car of ore from the C. d.• D. mine at Elkhorn is being loaded at the Northern Pacific depot for shipment to the East Helena smelter. T. L. Widdowson has . done the( haul- ing for this shipment. A tholough test is to be made of the ore at this BASE-BALL. Boulder has at last organized a base- ball association which promises to be of some service in the • base-ball field. Sixty-six citizens have joined together for the support of a club and have elected Frank Harlow as president, W. B. Gaffney '• as treasurer, Win. Morris as secretary and manager,. and Will Kahle as captain of the first nine. The officers, with the addition of De. Leighton, form a board of di- rectors. Robertson was chair- man of the fleeting and Tom Basye was elected 'secretary and Jaunts Situpkiits treasurer. After some discussion as to form and meaner of the celebration, Messrs. W. B. Gaffney, Wm. T. Sweet, Fred. McLean, Frank \ McGowan, and R. J. Dougherty were appointed a finance committee ' to solicit funds to pay the expenses of the celebration. Among the suggestions for the „celebration was the building of a large pavilion in wnich theliterary exercises could be held in the morning and which could be devoted to dancing in the afternoon.' Horse -racing, base-ball, and a flan> bean club were also mentionet1 features of the day. It is proposed also that the ladies get up aliberty ear with forty-nine young isle to re- present theStates and Territories. The meeting adjourned until this evening at the same place, when it is expected that the finance committee will report progress and the necessary committees to carry out the celebra- tion will' be appointed. • It is hoped that the citizens generally will turn out so that there Can be a united and hearty effort to appropriately celebrate the national holiday. The ladies are invited to be present also to lend their counsel and assistance in the matter. The meeting will be held at Groes- beck and Simpkins hall and the Boul- der Cornet Band will caH the people together. 4 - SOCIAL GOSSIP. Mrs. T. T. Nicholson, of Elkhorn, is visiting friends in Boulder. Mrs. J. W. Reeve, of Alhambra, has been visiting friends in Boulder for a couple of weeks. Groesbeck made a three days' visit to friends in Wickes the past week, returning Monday evening. Mrs. Carrie H. Doe, of Ovid, Michi- gan, is visiting ber !sister, Mrs. J. J. It is supposed he took away about Vi00 in cash, besides several suits of clothes and other des ' irable artides.
