June 5.—At seven o'clock this umriiing two men walked into the Montana Central. depot ,at Silver, sixteen miles from Helens where the agent and operator yere sleeping. Without Making any demands, the robbers opened firê - on - the - two - nil . en, who were still in bed. The first shot struck J. C. Jobst, the agent, in the head, inflicting injuries from which he has since died. Burrill, the telegraph operator, sprang through the window, carrying the sash with him, and ran in the direction of the section -house. One of the robbers rested his gun on the window -sill at the depot and de- liberately fired at the fleeing man, shooting him in the back and killing him instantly. The poor boy fell dead upon the door -step of the section - house. The robbers then broke open the cash drawer but it is not thought that they secured any Money. They then walked leisurely away to the hills. A posse under Billy Johns and another under Under 'Sheriff Walker pursued the robbers, over- took' them. 'in *a ulee about four miles from Silver station, and have killed both of them in the effort to arrest then, one of them being shot it six places and the other in four. None :of the posse was injured, A second posse arrived 'from' Helena sR the site just after the robbers hàfi been killed. The robbers were noticed hanging around the station last night. It is supposed their object was to secure the large amount of gold bullion which had been shipped from the Jay Gould mine yesterday, the robbers apparently not being aware that the bullion had gone into Helena. The parties who committed the murders and who received their pun- ishment BO quickly, are supposed to be two cousins named Quade, from Alma, Waseca county, Minnesota. They had evidently been around Helena for a month or two and had committed some burglaries. On their persons were found a gold watch, gold pencil, gold ring, and other property, which had been taken from the residence of Mr. Newberry, in the valley below Helena, three or four weeks ago. The murdered Jobst was from Wis- consin cir Illinois, while Burrill was from Detroit, Michigan. THE LAW AND THE LADY. (Exchange.) Patient nan: Suppose she has run him so heavily into debt that he can't tampon her, because his creditors grab every dollar as quick as he gets it, besides, ruining his business with their sett? Lawyer: 'If for any reason what- ever he fail to pay her the amount ordered, he will he sent to jail for con- tempt of court. _patient Man: Suppose she drives him out with a flat -iron and he's afraid to go back? Lawyer: She can arrest him for desertion. Patient 'Man: Well I don't see anything for Die to do but go hang myself. Lawyer: It's against the la,w to commit suicide, and if you get caught attempting' it you'll be fined and im- priaioned. Ten dullard, please. Good day. DON'T WANT SAM JONES. (Fer g us County Ar g ue.] Sam Jones threatens to visit Mon- tana this summer. Dakota has just been devastated by fire and'wind and now Montana is to be cursed by a visita- tion of Sam Jones, the revivalistic mountebank and blackguard. But people will go to see him aa they would \Jo -Jo, the dog -faced boy,\ or the \big -footed girl.\ With the Salvation Army singing \There are no flies on Jesus,\ and Sam Jones cracking min- strel jokes, the fall round -up of sinners snatched from the burning will be very light. With these attractions ' a circus, and two political campaigns Montana will soon begin to realize campaigns, she is a state, and see the necessity of in- creased facilities in the insane asylum. There are some advantages in living remote from a railroad. if - HE PARK MINE SOLD. [Helena Independent June 2d.] The Park Mining Company has paid the balance of its bond on the mine which they have had under bond for a year. Three thousand dollars were paid when the bond was made and the deed placed in escrow pending payment of the balance. The fortunate ow i ners were Chas. Slew, and Messrs. Gilloogly and Coiner, miners residing near Toston. To these gentlemen 812,000, the balance due in cash was paid a few days ago. Shaw has been in town ever since, paintin\er red and still is enjoying himself. It is stated he managed to dispose of 81,000 in twenty-four hours. Such.is life in the far west.
