D. Greene, Esq.. of Boulder, assumes the positiou for the coming campaign - 2 Under his management Tan AGE will support the Republican State and county ticket and do all in its power to elect that ticket, Believing that the principles of the Republican party are the best for the financial. moral, and social prosperity of the new State, it will endeavor to present those principles to its readers in such a manner as to win support for the party and ticket from those who may be in doubt and from those who here- tofore may have entertained a differ- - eut view. It heartily supports the nominees of the party, believing them to be reliable and competent men ,and it will urge their election as the method of applying the principles of the party. Thequest ions which the people of Mon- tana have to settle are no longer those solely of local self-government. but there are national issues at , take and DEMOCRATIC NOMINEES. Brief sketches of mimic of the Demo- cratic nominees for the offices - to be filled by thé ' electors of Jefferson county are herewith given: • • mantes Z. Wm?, Of Jefferson City, is the Democratic nominee for Clerk of the District Court for Jefferson 4:Minty. He Was _born in New York City in 1860 and received his education at the Mount Waeliington Collegiate Institute, from which -- institution lie graduated hi 1876. He then took an additional rof schooling in the University of ew York, and in.1877 came to Mon- . He followed clerking and ranch - in à . He has since been engaged in this county in merchan- dising. Ile is a member of no social organization. ALEX T. Ykiff, The Democratic nominee for County Clerk and ex eeio Recorder, was born in Boonville, Missouri, in 1860, and was educated in the State University at Columbia, Mo. After graduating he engaged in bookkeeping and bank- ing, and in 1885 came to Montana, ' being engaged in this Territory in the Butte bank of Clark ' itc Lambie and in the Bank of Jefferson County. Ile made a visit home last winter, hut returned last spring, and is becoming identified with the mining interests of Jefferson county. Ile ia unmarried and is not a member of any of the social or benevolent societies. .DOLLET HA ILFORD, Candidate for mêlection fie the office of Sheriff, was born in Columbia, Mo., in 1861, coming with his parents to Helena in 1866. He watt educated in thectnnmon schools ofthe Territory and the high school of Helena, this being supplemented by eighteen months in the business college of Davenport, Iowa. He has been en gaged in farming a considerable share of the days of his manhood, though for a couple of years he was eonneet- ed with the office of the City Marshal of helena in a clerical capacity. Three ' years ago he was the nominee of the Democrats of Jefferson county for the office of Sheriff, but was de- feated by Dan. McNeill by a very considerable majority. Last year he again received the nomination of the Demomey for the office and was elected over Frank Harlow_by a small majority. Ile is married and has one child. THE i•UltsEILNIF-NCY Of - the Democ- racy of Montana to \ boodle, \ was very clearly ' shown at Anaconda last week in the enthusiasm with which' Millionaire Sam Ilauser, Mihliobaire ' W. A. Clark, and Millionaire C. A. Broadwater were appointed a Commit- tee to wait on Millionaire Marcus Daly and request him to act as Chait- man of the Democratic State Central Committee. The enthusiasm mani- fested at the time was never equalled during the sessions of the Convention, and, indeed, was never approached except when it was announced that the platform endorsed the Republican principle of protection to home in- dustry and again when it was ailei4v flounced that Major Martin Maginnis had consented to be led like a lamb to i the sacrifice. Of (verse the Big Four will contribute cheeks far tens of, thousands of dollare to the campaign fund, and their reward is expected in I the future in the shape of seats in the United States Senate. Mid should the new State be so unfortunate as to enfer the Union with ti Democratic E. P. WAXEN, Nominee for County Treasurer, was born near Mineral Point, Wis., in 1851. He received his education in the publie ' seliools and in the normal school of the State at Platteville. He taught school a couple of years in Wisconsin and in 1873 came to Mon- tana. Since coining to Montana he has been most of his time in Jeffer- son county, engaged in teaching, freighting, railroading, and farming, having now a large stock ranch near the mouth of Beaver creek. He was married in 1876 and has six children. Last fall he was nominated by the Democrats for the same position to hich he has been nominated this 'year, but was defeated by Dan. McNeill. W. E. DEAN, Democratic nominee for reêlection to the office of Superintendent of Com- mon Schools, was born in Louisiana in 1856, and was educated in the pub- lic schools of the State and in the high school at Fayetteville, Ark. Sinee leaving school he has followed THE NEW ; TICKET. THE Aos presents herewith the form of ticket which mast be used in Montana at the election next month. The official tickets, that is, time which must be used by the electors in casting their ballots, will be prints ed by the respective counties. As may be seen, the ticket is likely to be quite lengthy. Properly there should be two tickets, one for the county and one for the State. When» the new law was first drawn up it was net anticipated that Montana *old beeome a State so son, and under the Territorial elections the ticket would not have been distressingly long. if the law works satisfactorily, it will be the duty of the next Legis- lature to ,amend the law in this and in other particulars. The voter indi- cates the person for whom he wishes to vote by placing an X ' in the right- hand column. If the elector wishes to vote for some one whose name is not on the ticket, he writes the name in the blank space under the title of the office. For Mesabi r at Cenagrees.
