' We do not believe there is one single voter i t this school district who is opposed to the special t&x for the con- j tinuancc of our schools. The pro rata amount will be so email to each taxpay er that the amount spent for tobacco in a single day would pay the lax. The Northern Pacific will bear about 75 per cont of the tax and even they have never been known to kick at paying a school tax. If there is one single indi vidual in our district who will oppose thft proposition we want a lock of hi* hair and his photo to send to the idiotic asylum for future inspection. If a man aver disgraced his tire, brought dishonor to the gray hairs of his agt i mother or made of himielf a pimple in respectable humanity, a wart in the evoa of destvnt society, a bunion on the face of a pro gressive community, it was when lie voted againel liie maintainance of oui public schools and the education of our children. There is not a man in oui district whose eyes are so close together. 'Thompson Falls is one of those progres sive towns where there is 9 month* achool in a year and one of the bc*t con ducted ones in the state with far the 'brightest lot of little children. Moat men live in a vorl 1 of their own and in t h a t limited circle alone are the} ambitious for distinction and applause. Thus, cases of injustice and oppression, and tyranny, and the most extravagant bigotry, are in constant occurrence among us every-day. It in the custom to trumpet forth much wonder and as tonishment at the chief actors therein setting at defiance so completely th* opinion uf Lhe world; but thers is no greater fallacy; it :s prtcieely because they do consult the opinion o! their own little wo^ld that such tilings take plan at all, and strike the great world dumb with amazement. It is such with thi present Montana legislators, or a goodI \ number of them, who, instead of doing the wishes of the people who sent them there, set aside every thing but individ ual gan, and, hidden behind the magic shrine of the golden image, betray iheii fellow man, sacrifice principle for a song, and elect to congress a pronounced ene my of the people. Happy is the man who has that in hit- aoul which acts upon the dejected af Al »ril dew upon violet roots. Gifts iron, the hand of silver and gold, but the heart gives that which neitlu r silver noi gold can buy. Owing to the fact that no business or importance was transacts 1 this week by the Montana legislature other thr.n th*- electing of two U. S. Senators we do not consider it worth while to take up time and apace in giving an account of the proceedings. Lee Mantle and Tom Carter were the successful candidates, whoa actions in cjngress must be ac counted for by the republ ican party in the future. The ball v as simply tnnounced as being under the auspices cf the committee, and, while not being there personally, through my thecsophi^ pow $rp can very nearly call tha turn. Tba social festivjtiea of the oil year te r n r n a l e i at McOowan’s hall i( being the principal event of the sea son, and apjtropo, we will briefly de scribe the hall which in the complete ness of its fitr.cs3 and Uio beauty of its adornment its without rival. Natural) the attention of the guest were attracted to the furniahinga and decorations. The elegance and delicato taste displayed were the theme of general conversation, it is peculiarly adapted to the reception of large number.*1. There is nr.t only ample space for those who wish to danci Imt in an adjoining apartment on the east end partially concealed by heavy turki&h diapery, ie room for those who !*eek the quiet retirement of an evening*? lete a tete. This town, (ulreadv famous throughout western Montana for the gracious hospitality and social activity of its favored inhabitants). nevi_r saw a happier occasion. Allthe^uebts as they arrived were promptly received and at once put at their ease by the gracious courtesy cf the reception committee. ] Delightful music enlivened the occasion. Decorations of delicate selection were abundant, and best of all was the feeliny of good fellowship which prevailed in mticipation of a brighter luture in the ^iad New Year whose event wasmagnih eently celebtated bt-fore the break t,i day. As usual at 12 o ’clock an elegant luiuh was served combined with a How of reason and a Hast of soul. It may be said tl.at the costumes of the ladies were the richest ar.d niopit appropriate that jvei honored the countless similar oc- •asiona and would have made the pro- iuctione of the far famed worth pale with envy and lacerate i h r r lu-art with tears of incompeiency. Those who er.- j;yed the pri\il t;e of g-acing the oc casion with ttieir presence sought to present the cultured element at its best and the very uir seemed permeated with a lingering wish for all the pood fortune that are within the possibilities of j. ^reat New Year. To say the least the *vent furnished an opportunity for rare enjoyment and singular good will nnd fraternal feeling prevailed. The youth .tnd beauty were there to cruse the mystic hours wi’h flying fi et and w ith me accord all entem l hesrtliy in the terpsicoreau celebration. On with the lance. Let mirth be unconfined. The .eatures of the now dances produced ipeciidly for the occasion by that prince of duiiceis, Mr. Huston, our genial and whole souled agent, were unique and too varied for mention, being so intricate in their bewildering variety, yet seemingly readily executed by those present. Thi; nost noticeable of wnom were the takers and Jan. Willis. They wore .iere, thare and every where, balancing ,n the cori.ers.
