I LATEST SPORTING LS Now that Jack Johnson, the hIS black heavyweight, is in the public eye, his managers are beginning to pester Jeffries with challenges again. A short time ago in Los Angeles Jeff gave his reasons for keeping out of the fighting game. And they were good, sound reasons. He won't tight Johnson, Burns or anybody else. Jeffries doesn't care for fighting for fighting's sake. He has no hankering for a theatri- cal life. He has all the money he needs. And he is making more right now, in business, than he ever made while in the ring. Fighting again would mean a lot of hard work and no financial gain_ Pretty good reasons, all of them. \As for Johnson,\ said Jim, \If I ev- er fought again it would be with a white man, and I don't care to mix with anybody but white men. Nobody on earth is going to argue me into doing anything I don't want to do. \When I needed a few dollars, early in the game, it was different. I had to have the money, and I fought any- body they tossed into me. When I became independent I chose my own company, and barred negroes. \I wouldn't fight again unless I trained long enough to be at my best. I'd train a year. That would make me lose a lot of time. There wouldn't be enough in the purse to pay me for that. I'd have to make it up by going on the stage again. I got sick of that, and I don't want any more of it in mine. \I'm free now, and I'm going to stay free. When I feel like hunting or fish- ing I don't want to be tied up with training or theatrical dates. The train- ing I am doing now is only to keep my muscles at work. \Fighting is hard work. Why should I flight when I can sit out In the shaae of my own trees and watch the money come rolling in? I'm making a bar- rel of money now. Why, I have a ranch of 146 acres. It was unimproved ;end when I bought it. \I spent a couple of years living on it and working like a horse myself to get it into shape. Now I keep mett out there, and once in awhile I go oue to see that everything is going regale... It run. t fjear., v over 10J acres in alfalfa. \There are eight crops a year. It ys from $105 to $110 an acre year- ly clear profit over all expenses. There's an income of about $11,000 a year, without any hard work. \Now I have one of the 200 bar le ceases allowed in Los Angeles. My partner and I are spending $60,000 fitting up the finest bar on the coast. We'll get that all back within a year, and after that it's all velvet.\ From what Jeff has to say, it seems that the best thing for Mr. Johnson to do is to go hunting for Tommy Burns. Jeffries may re-enter the ring some day. He may win his first fight, and perhaps the second, but defeat will be his lot eventually. For freight and passenger rates and general Information, address E. Henry, with the Unit- ed States Express Co., Chicago, writes. \Out general superintendent, Mr. Qldek—hended e rne a bottle of Cham- berlain's Colic, Cholera' arid - Diarrhoea Remedy some time ago to check an attack of the old chronic diarrhoea. I have used It since that time and cured many on our trains who have been sick. I am an old sokller who served with Rutherford B. Whet a Clergyman Finds la Little Known in Words of Jesus. It is safe to say that to the great mass of Christians it has not even occurred to ask whether Jesus had a sense of humor or not, By many the question, even if raised, would be at once dismissed as trifling or perhaps irreverent; but to others it may seem not only a proper but an interesting inquiry. Our evidence of the existence of this genial quality in Jesus Is naturally scanty. It is not strange that the Gos- pel should emphasize the serious side of His message almost to the exclu- sion of every other aspect of it. The message was, of course, a serious one. If there were touches of humor in it here or there, they were incidental. Even supposing that sayings of Je- sus, which were originally brightened by sidelights of humor were preserved for us absolutely intact, literal quo- tations of His precise words, the pres- ence of the humor in them would not necessarily be certain to us. For it Is a well known fact that often humor which was uninistaken in the spoken word seems to evaporate in the pro- cess of recording. The speaker's tone and the expression of his feee are needed as commentary, and without them the spirit of the utterance be- comes indeterminate. But before proceeding to canvass the evidence, notice one or two char- acteristics of Jesus' recorded words that make His possession of a sense of humor seem more or lees pmbablo. In the first place. It is evident that in Him imagination, a chief essential of humor, was highly developed. He speaks habitually In figures. Parables, metaphor, similes, come so close to- gether and in such abundance that His collected sayings are like a sort of moving picture. In the second place, there is often a kind of homeliness in His imagina- tive expressions that would provide excellent raw material for humor when needed. \I will make you fishers of men,\ is an instance, especially con- sidering the common -place associations of the phrase in the minds of those Galilean fishermen to whom it was ad- dressed. A similar example, though as actually spoken the words are very far removed from pleasantry. Is fouhd in one of Christ's woes pronounced upon the scribes and Pharisees: \Ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but in- wardly are frill of deed men's bones. - There is a sort of unvarnished direct- ness in this striking word picture that, under other conditions, would easily lend Itself to the use of humor. And it may be observed, by the way, that one who was so keen in detecting eind exposing an Incongruity as Jesus here prove. Himself to have been certain- ly possessed an important essential of the humorous point of view. Another trait of Jesus that would the word without offense. I mean a quickness and aptness in conversa- tion; for instance, in reply to entang - ling questions. An example of this is found in His instant use of the image sad superscription of a penny, when asked about the lawfulness of giving tribute. And something of the same sort, though in a more artificial form, appears in the apt quotations from scripture used both as question and as answer in that little allegory known Notice is hereby given ORAL commonly as the Temptation in the THOMAS R. MOORE. Of the literary humor the clearest examples in Christ's words appear per- haps in the form of exaggeration. The parable of the Mote and the Beam is a famous instance. The absurdity of the contrast is so great—an infinitesi- mal speck in the one eye, and a log of wood in the other—that it could hardly have been spoken for the first time without raising a laugh, if it was spoken with any vigor at all; and, in- deed, even today, if you take pains to think what the parable says, you can- not help smiling when you hear it. An exactly parallel illustration is found in the picture of the Pharisees, \strain- ing out a gnat and swallowing a cam- el.\ A more elaborate instance of lit- erary humor is the delightful little glimpse that Jesus gives us of chil- dren at their games in the market place: \We piped unto you and ye did not dance; we walled and ye did not mourn.\ It is the last clause that causes, or ought to cause, a smile: \We wailed and ye did not mourn,\ or More literally, \did not beat your breasts.\ Read this seriously, and you have before you an inexplicable group le, manifestly grown up—not a — litesdleinuts charge' one another with lack of sympathy- NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION.—De- But the scene that Jesus really drew partment of the Interor. But it is humorous, whether In the Gospel or out of it. For my part, I have at least little doubt that when Jesus first made this graphic reference to the much married man BOTne One among the auditors who wae known to walk in matrimonial leading strings was nudged or clapped on the back by lie companions. It would perhaps be tedious to point out further instances; and it is enough to say that, were it desirable, the il- lustrations of Christ's use of humor could be considerably extended. In- deed, it Is probable that when once the possibility of humor in the Masters words has been conceived those who read the Gospels with this subject in their thought will be surprised at the frequency with which they detect the vestige of a smile; and probably they will be not only surprised but pleased at the freshness and lifelikeness which seem to be restored to many of the incidents and sayings by the recOgni- tion in them of the touch of humor.— Rev.
