I LATEST SPORTING 1 L NEWS New Haven, COBU., Sept. 18.—Wal- ter Camp, Yale head advisory football coach, who hap, Wee editing the foot- ball rules this fall, says his task Is fieished. From the changes in the code it Ls certain that the conserv- atives have carried the day and Caat there will b e no revolutionary changes from the rules which were put into effect last fall. The most important alteration is the clause which Provide* for a penalty of 16 yards for a drop- ped forward pass if the error is made on the first or second down. Last Year the ball went to the other side. Two umpires are made obligatory to free toe game from the last vestige of roughness. It is made clear that any lineman may carry the ball, pro- vided he does not leave his Pace le the line till the ball is put in play. :n the car.. of a kick 001 Rau- the toriety be given him, says the safety the opponents must line up on Anaconda Standard. He is not look - the 35, instead of the 26 -yard line. lug for a fight here, nor are hie thoughts traveling along puglistic lines at all. He is tired of the mad- ding multitude and is seeking a rest from the constant buzz of pub- licity. Incidentally he is looking after a bit of unfinished business left over when he departed from Montana af- ter winning over Aurelia Herrera in 1904. Peculiarly enough, considering the number of young ladies' names with which that of the Battler has been linked since he broke into the spotlight, Nelson's present visit does not concern a girl, but just what it is he is not ready to state. That it is of interest to Chief of Police Wynne and Judge McGowan was made evident, for shortly after ar- rival the little 'Dane made them d visit, and it ,was as the result or that that Nelson's presence in Butte be- came public. He expects to remain here a few days, but will avoid pub- licity as far as possible. GEO. R. CREEL The Lewistown Undertaker and Licensed Embalmer.., M.lectric slag„ Main St. Isti Tsar eeeee Ns. 2 The best team does not always win the pennants in baseball, says Hugh Fullerton. Given a fair field and de- cent luck, the club composed of the best ball players ought to win, but the fact remains that, in a close race, the pennant winner generally looks weaker, even after winning, than the loser. There are dozens of things that hap- pen to keep a team from landing a pennant about which the general pub- lic is entirely ignorant and which nev- er can be explained clearly. For instance, one of the mysteries of baseball was the breaking up of the famous White stocking team. Hun- dreds and thousands of people cursed the management for selling off star players and wrecking the club—and few ever knew why it was. The man- agement felt worse over it than the fans possibly could feel—but it was inevitable. A scandal in the club con- cerning two members and the wife of one of them started the trouble. Threats to kill each other were made —and the disruption of the club be- came absolutely necessary. The sale of Kelly and Clarkson was the begin- ning—and stfter a time all parties to the scandal were let out—and Chi- cago was given a decade of losing Women have been the cause of the ruin of more good Mel Clubs than• anything else. They need not neces- sarily be bad women. There was one club in the old twelve -club National league which, for two years, was knocked out of all chances of win- ning merely because the wife of one of the players was an inveterate gos- sip. She knew everything that went on in the club, and retailed it until she had half the players up in arms against each other. One of the best managers in the country today frowns upon all women, and his players, under his direction, forbid their wives to mention the sub- ject of baseball to each other. The result is that there is the best of feel- ing in the club. Almost every mem- ber of the team is married, their wives meet socially at all times—and base- ball is tabooed by common consent. I know a catcher, one of the tough- est, hardest fellows in the business, Who nearly was ruined as a catcher by the women of the club. Re was so strong and tough that you couldn't have dented him with an ax, but one day he split his hand with a hit. He thought' nothing of it: When he left the grounds he had tied up the in- jured place with a rag—and was all right. By the next morning he was ready to go to a hospital—and he did lap. off off for two weeks, all because the women made a martyr Zhim. - Horse racing, however, has ruined almost as many clubs as women have. Once get a team interested in horse racing, and so far as winning goes, it might as well disband. (Me of the greatest troubles in the present New York National league ere clubs. Tery line. r err Sow ali Za r re all townspeople. team Is the devotion of some of the players to the racing game. McGraw himself has been so successful at it that base ball has become a sort of side issue. Many of his players have followed big example, and the result Is they think more of horse racing than baseba ll. Racing did more to wreck Hanlon's championship Brooklyn team than any other thing. The Washington Park grounds are so close to the Brighton and Sheepshead track that the players could see two or three races before time to practice, as the games are called late in Brooklyn. Eventually baseball was forgotten, and the con- versation in the club house dwelt only on horse racing. Anson had a crowd of horse race fans for several years, and the result on the work of the team was some- thing frightful. They talked horse racing even on the field, and had the telegraph operators throwing out mes- sages telling what horse had won. Gambling in several forms broke up the New York ball club under the Fredeman regime. There always was a crap game or a poker game In the club house, and the stakes were so high that bitter feeling was engen- dered. The old Washington club under the Wagnere was another example of the effects of gambling. The Chicago team the second year under Tom Burns was wrecked by this same sort of deal. the manager setting it a bad exam- ple in that respect. Burns also was charged by the Pittsburg owners With running their club, when he was man- ager, by permitting and encouraging gambling. \Will we stand by our boys?\ And the answer came: \We never quit!\ When Chicago loses they make ex- cuses, knowing the boys are trying their best. When Chicago wins they remain on the grounds to celebrate. They want the sport they like, and in that sport they want a winner. They know they can't get one unless they encourage the men playing. So they go out there and cheer them in- stead of criticising. Jack Johnson, the colored aspirant for the heavyweight championship, gained an easy victory over Sailor Burke in their six round fight last week. Johnson knocked the sailor down several times and received no damage himself. Burke went away out of his class to meet the colored man, being outweighed by a Mg margin. Two or three ladies were working with her and giving her whisky. I went to my suit case and got my bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Chol- era and Diarrhoea Remedy (I never travel without it), ran to the water tank, put a double dose of the medi- cine in the glass, poured some water Into it and stirred it with a pencil: then I had quite a time to get the ladies to let me g lye it to her, but I succeeded. I could at once see the effect and I worked with her, rubbing her hands, and in twenty minutes I gave her another dose. By this time we were almost into he Grande, where I was to leave the train, I gave the bottle to the husband to be used in case another dose should be needed, but by the time the train ran into he Grande she was all right, and I re- ceived the thanks of every passenger in the car.\ For sale by C.
