The Broadus Independent was a short lived paper (April 10-May 24, 1919), which was bought by the owner of the Powder River County Examiner who then incorporated the name into his new venture the Powder River County Examiner and the Broadus Independent. (Both the Broadus Independent and the Powder River Examiner from April 10, 1919- November 17, 1922 are available on Chronicling America.) From 1919-Sept 1925, there was a succession of three owners, R. L. Linder, M. A. Spooner, and M. Hugo Champlin. When Champlin sold the paper to the father and son team of Edwin A Jones Sr. and E. Ashton Jones, a new era of stability began. After sixteen years of publication on May 24, 1935, the paper dropped the Broadus Independent and became just the Powder River County Examiner. Not until 1961 would the name change again when it dropped County from its name. This 1935 change was only affected the name and the Jones family continued to run the paper until 1955. Regardless of the name, this Broadus paper informed its readers starting with the front page which called out important issues starting with railroad development and the 1923 flood which found the city 2-3 feet under water and continued by covering the high school, the state legislature, and agricultural news.
