First published May 1897, The Winston Prospector’s purpose was “to aid the progress of the Winston mining district, and of Broadwater County.” In addition to reporting on the local mining district and the activities of the county commissioners, the first editors of The Prospector frequently added their own commentary to the reprinted reporting of other Montana newspapers. The Townsend Star and The Townsend Messenger were frequently taunted and criticized in the pages of The Prospector, but any Montana newspaper could be the subject of its corrections or approval.
