US Second St. So. l o c a l : n e w s William MacDonald Wright trans acted business in town a couple of days this week. - Baer Paw Lodge No. 55,1. O. O. F., has been recently organized at Chinook with a membership of over forty. Joseph C. McCuaig, of Dupuyer, was in town a couple of days the first of the week. Joe has a host of friends in Choteau who *are always pleased to see him. Harry C. Kunkel, of Dupuyer, was a visitor in Choteau last Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. Kunkel has recent ly sold his barber shop in that town to John Clayton, of Pondera. J. L. Cox, aged 64 years, died at Columbus hospital last evening, after a brief illness. He came to the hos pital from Pondera. Nothing ’ is known of hir relatives. The body is at McAllister’s undertaking rooms.— Tribune. It is reported that Evangelist Mar tin has been having good results at Lewistown. Over 100 persons have made a start in the Christian life. Half of these have joined the church. Mr. Martin will next hold meetings at Bozeman. James Harris and daughter, Lil lian, are spending a few days at the West hotel. Mr. Harris is the pro prietor of a store at Altyn and is also the manager of the Michigan. & Mon tana Copper Mining company.— Kallspell Herald-Journal. E. J. Osgood was brought to Cho teau Wednesday from Belleview suf- fering with a broken leg, caused by a horse falling with him the day before. He is now at the Choteau house, and under the care of Dr. Brooks is do ing as well as could be expected. Sheriff Taylor returned from Minnesota last Saturday afternoon, having in custody George Jacobson, who is wanted for his connection with the recent illegal shipment of horses from Baltic. Jacobson waived examination before Justice Dawes, of Shelby, and was bound over to the district court. His bonds were placed at S3,000 which he has been unable to furnish. Capt. L. W. Cooke, of the 3d in fantry, now in service in tho Philip pines, has been nominated by Presi dent McKinley as major iu the 6th infantry. The nomination will prob ably be ratified by the United States senate. Capt. Cooke will be remem bered by our readers as a former In dian agent at the Blackfeet agency. His many friends in that section will be pleased to learn of his promotion in the service. “ H. G. McLeod Maingy, o f Toronto, writes the publisher of T he C ronicle asking us to ascertain, if possi ble, the whereabouts of his son, George Maingy. A few years ago George was a resident of Dupuyer, and perhaps some of his acquaint ances in that section know where he is now located. Any information re ceived by us will be forwarded to Mr. Maingy, Sr., at Toronto, who is very anxious to locate his son. We will close our studio iu Choteau March 1st to go into business in Great Falls. We make this state ment so as to give all a chance to get work while they can get it in Choteau. You may never have another chance to get good work here as it is a rare thing that a first class workman will come to a small town. Wheir,of the Choteau Mercan tile company, returned from a busi ness trip to Great Falls Wednesday evening. The next regular meetiug of the Ladies Industrial socioty will bo held at Prof. Cole’s on Wednesday, Feb ruary 27 th. A crowd of our young people are making arrangements to attend the dance to be given at Rank Young’s home this evening at Belleview. Rev. C. E. Cunningham will hold religious services at the Burton school house next Sunday afternoon. All are cordially invited to be present. Rey. Attwood, of Great Falls, will hold services in the town hall Sun day, morning and evening, February 17th. All are cordially invited to attend. A farce entitled “The Now Woman,” will probably be given at J the town hall, .during court week, under the auspices of the Ladies In dustrial society. The Valentine social given at the town hall Wednesday evening by the Epworth League was well attended by our people. Those present report having had a very pleasant time. Miss Lynch, teacher of the Marias 'school, is in town this week for the purpose of taking the teachers’ ex amination. While in town she is the guest of Mrs. Cheuoweth, the county superintendent. “Is it I,” is the subject Rev. C. E. Cunningham has chosen for his' dis course next Sunday morning iu the Methodist Episcopal church, while in the evening his subject will be “The Door.” Everybody is invited to attend these services. John Zimmerman is in town this week from Pondera. He has just finished two wells at Donald Gra ham’s place, and reports that both of them are flowing wells. One is down oulv sixty feet and flows about a half inch of water while the other one is eighty feet in depth and flows about 1J- inches. Paul Jacobson, who has been em ployed for some time with the Cho teau Mercantile company, left here Wednesday evening for Minnesota, where he will visit with relatives for a couple of weeks. From there he goes to New Whatcomb, Wash., for a two months’ visit. T he C hronicle will keep him posted on Choteau happenings while he is absent. A Milwaukeee preacher asserts that “nude figures” on five-dollar bills are “ indecent.” Perhaps this is so, but we never had one of those bills long enough to examine it critically. But we don’t think “ nude figures” would shock us very much. Wo have at tended social entertainments where the ladies were in “ full dress” and 4 wore but little more than a necklace above the belt, and we still liye.
