Of course our democratic fricudH object to tlio “wuler euro.” But if whiskey had been used inatoad cf water it would bo hard to keep a largo majority of tlio “unwashed” from offering thcuiHolvos as victims. In ils issuo of May 3, the Helena Herald says that it will not quit abusing republican leaders of the statu and Iliât, it will not submit to tho will of the inujority as expressed by tho republican conventions. Still tho Herald wauls to he classed as a republican paper. Mary Elizabeth MacLoan of.Butte is in love with the devil—so she says und Mary ought to know. She wants his majesty to hug her tight. Ail of which tho old boy (und many of hi disciples) will be pleased to do at the first opportunity. Mary is fairly good looking, according to her pic turos, and only those who appear to ho jealous of hor claim that sho “nutty.” A minister of the gospel once saw a crowd of hoys sitting in front of a ring with a small dog in tho center Walking up to tho crowd ho inquired “What mo you going to do rvith thu dog, hoys?” After a short silence om of them replied: “Wo are going to give him to tho ouo who cun loll I hi biggest ho.” Tho preacher replied “I am surprised at you, boys, for when I was a hoy 1 never told a lie.” After another short pause one little follow shouted! “Give him (lie dog, boys!” Have tho “fourteen disgruutles” noticed that soi oral federal positions have been Idled by appointment by President Koosovoll during tlio past few weeks, and that tho successful candidates for these places wero those who weie endorsed by tlio lepublieati stale central.committee? It is evi dent tliul tho president has fully in - vostigated the political silualion in Montana and has very naturally reached the conclusion that the state committee wus madeupof hone able, upright and trustworthy mon, v.ki’o those uho opposed it were doing so tj further their own persoual aims und ambitions. Will “Ferg” pleaso give just ouo good reason why the commissioners of any county of tiiu stale of Moutauu should compel the publisher of a newspaper to do tho county printing for one half or any other fraction less than legul rates? The codes provide that a publisher shall not charge more tlmu a given amount for the different classes of work fnrnishod. Tho codes also provide that tho county treasurer, tho clerk and re corder and Oliver county oflieirdsshall receive a certain sum per mouth us compensation for their services. Why should a pi inter bo compelled to lake ouo half of I ho legal rate for his ser- while all others who work for vie the county receive full pay? Extension of H o m estead L aw.
