Montana cannot afford to be rep resented iu the hails of congress by a mun who boasts that ho was named after a man who shot union Boldiers and sympathizers iu the back from ambush. “I am a rebel” proudly proclaims John Morgau Evaus, tlio democratic candidate for cougross. It is up to thepeoplo o f Montana to oay whether or not such sentiments meet with their approval. The republican candidates for county commissioner—Messrs. Ed Bollorud of the Burton bench, C. J. Braron, of Sholby, and Wm. Cowgill, of Dupuycr, are in every way quali fied for the positions to which they Uavo been nominated. The demo crats of Teton county, in convention assembled, fully recognizo this fact, and have admitted their inability to place better men iu the field by not agreeing upon three democratic can didates for the8Q positions. When Ferg was in town this week he made some very loud talks about the county commissioners allowing §1700 for county printing at their March and Seplomber 1092, meetings. Wbou confronted with indisputable evidence that loss than $1500 was al lowed at the March, June and Sept omber, 1002, meetings he shut up like a clam. However when he gets back to Shelby, whore misrepresentation of the facts seems to be recognized by a eertaiu elomont as a virtue, we expect to hoar him break out again Now that tho Sholby ludopondont has been dodared tho official organ of Teton county democracy which is at best a very doubtful honor—wo ex pect to seo Ferg come out in his true colors and no longer .claim to bo in dependent. (.hie democratic delog.-iIo was heard to remark that Sholby would huvo a county commissioner anyway. That fbpy would go homo and wdrk for the election of Carl J Braron. In our opinion they Uavo arrived at a wise conclusion. The Judith Basin Nows is tho nanio of a new paper thut has ar rived in our office, It is published at Lowistown and is a bright, newsy pnpor. It will be independent in politics and promises to watch out for the iutorests of both parties dur ing tho campnigu. » T. W. OLESON. W. N. RUSSELL. Clioteau Painting Company. PAINTERS, PAPER-HANGERS & DECORATORS. Sign and Vehicle Painting a Specialty. Estimates Cheerfully Furnished on all Kinds of Workj O f f i c e at th e C h o t e a u H o u s e . J ohn M oroan Evans, tho demo cratic nominee for congressman, made moro than one “ bull” iu his remarks accepting the nomination. Besides beiug a confessed rebel ho will go iuto tho campaign “ with tho Bpirit of an old woman.” For confirmation of this read his spoech of acceptance at Bozeman last week. W il'iam Lindsay, of Dawspu county, has been selected chairman of tho state republican central committee. Mr. Lindsay is one off those bouorable j republicans in tho Bixlh legislative assembly who refused vClark’s gold for a vote for U. S. senator and ip „ .V, honoring him by selecting- him’ the head of ils slate committee, • the re publicans are honoring themselves. Wo know an old woman out in tho country who, when she is comiDg to town with her “ old man,” koeps up a running fire of complaint, orders and abujee of him and his driving of the team. The old man is a good horso- man and never had an a.ccidput with a team iu his Jifo that we know of, yet the old woman works herself into a nervous fury abouthisdrivingevery time they go out, yet she doesn’t know a horse from a tn'ilo and can’t hold tho lines safely when ,the team is staudiug still. This old couple remiuds us of the two parties. The republican party like the old man, kuows its business, and is safe, trusty and reliable. The democratic party, like the old woman, does nothing but crab, find fault, give orders and worry about things that might happen, yet they are as incompetent as she wore tho remains put iu their bands. A Montana Mystery. i >} 3 V p\“ f The civil war came fo a close over 35 yoars ago, but John Morgan Evans, tho democratic candidate forcongress, does not seem to be aware of that fact. A stinging rebuke should bo administered to him by the vöters of this state for the disreputable manner in which ho (Eyans) has brought the ong forgotleu “bloody shirt” v-into this campaign, ; L,., .. , j. ,.>v •; Ira Pressley and bio wife, whoso homo is near Superior, Mont., are at Parson’s hospital in Missoula, both near death and unable to tell who wouuded them. Pressley’s throat is cut from oar to ear and tho woman is unconscious from a blow on the head that caused contusion of tho skull. Tho man is conscious and says be was iu bed when his throat was cut, but says he does not know who did tho cutting. How Pressley has con tinued to live since the cutting is a wonder. His wiudpipe is completely sevored and tho aesapbagus cut clear through to the back, and the head is almost half severed. By pressing the chin down toward the chest in such a manner as to bring tho severec windpipe together, the ipee can spoak jn a bare!}' uudible voice, and iu this manner was eble to answer a few questions. Ho denies baying any troublo with his wife. ¡PATRO N IZE H O M E IN D U S T R Y ! W h e n looking for the Best, ask for G REEN H O O D ’S O V E R A L L S ! * FOR SALE BY J O S . Profossor Dewar demonstrated how great an amount of heat must be taken from the so called permanent gases to make them liquid and how much moro to make them solid. Yet nature has solidified gas ipto the form of coal, and solid coal, like solid ice, will ouly dissolve into vapor through the expenditure of heat. Their Hearts Gladdened. The hearts of hundro Is of em ployes of the Burlington railroad were gladdened yesterday by ^Ihe receipt of a letter from the superin tendent of their division announcing a raise of wages all round, says the Billings Gazette. The increase upplies to operators, clerks, switchmen and traiumon, and was a total surprise to all except the traiupiou, .who havo boon working for a schedule of pay and increase of wages for some time. Their requests were complied with, and the raise a i -1 fecting other employes was made voluntarily, and therefore is moro acceptable. Tho increase averagos all round about 10 per cent and took effect the first day of September. Tfie JJiirlinglon has enjoyed a profitable, rushing business during the past year and its action in mak iug a yoluntary raiso indicates that it is willing to share\ its prosperity with its large and efficient corps of employes.
