A - ' , onel Lucus was pursuaded to furnish details for a more oxtendod narrative, which follows: At tho beginning of tho Civil War in 18’Gl three young ruon ontorod tho service. W. E. Lawless went out ob a member of tho Seventh Illinois Infantry, F. A. Wost iu the Socond Minnesota Infantry and W. V. Lucus in the Fourteenth Iowa Infantry. Their several regiments belonged to the Western armies—Sevouth Illinois and Fourteenth Iowa to the Army of tho Tennesseo and the Second Min nesota to tho Army of tho Cumberland. All suw much and hard service. Whon Sbormau was advancing on Atlanta the whole route was a con tinuous battlefield. At Allaloona Puss wore stored im mensu quautitios of rations and sup plies of different kinds, including ammunition and ordinance. Th« ag gregate value of tho Government property reached into tho millions and was iu roality the source from whence sustenance for tho advancing armies of tho Union must bo drawn. While Sherman was making one of his famous flank movements about Keuosaw mountain, by) accident those yaluablo stores wore uncovered fora dry or two, only being gu irded by a small forco, Tho mijiturt genius of Johnson discovered it an.I ho dis patched Stuart’s corps]to rush upon tho town, sweep away tho light guard and doatroy everything iu the place, which accomphahod Shor man would necessarily havo to fall back to Chattanooga or near tbore, which would bo Johnson’s oppor tunity to strike and inflict great punishment upon his adversary. General Corse wag a few rmles away with his biigado and by signal ho was ordered to mak9 haste to Allatoona, assume command and hold it at all hazards. Corso was the officer of all others to receive and execute such an order. Ho succeeded in reaching (l.o little town aud as rapidly as possible put its defences iu shape to resist tho onslaught by probably 20 000 veteran troops of Johnson’s army. Corse’s forco did not oxcoed 1500 or 1000 men. The enemy reached the environments of the town snd, after summoning Corso to ftuirondor and ho sternly and impudeutally refusing, the attack was begun. It is not exaggeration to say no micb defeuce, no such dos- pernfo fighting, no such heroism was displayed by any command as by Corse’s little band of mon cooped up iu Allatoona Pass. From the top of Keuosaw mountain, twenty miles awav, Sherman saw tho evidences of tiiu unequal and death strugglo Corse was makiug. Furious with excitement aud four thnt tho 8partaus with Corse oould not hold out until tooops who wore going nt bronk- speed to relievo them could reach them. Lawless and West wore with Corse, the latter boingn signal officer. Whou Sherman succeeded, from the top of Konesaw, in signaling Corso with the electrifying words, “Hold tho fort, I am coming,\ the little band of dust- begrimed and powder-burned heroes sot up a cheor of doiianco aud fought on. It was 'Yost who, from the parapet of tho smoke-envelopod fort, received the signal and it was-him whosonl back General Corse’s laconic but profauo answer, \I am short an oar and part of a jawbone, but cau whip h—1 yet.” Sherman’s dispatch has gone into song aud story, as tho notes rise and fall iu tho sauctuuries when the peoplo sing, “Hold the Fort, I am Coming,\ tho old Boldier’s blood tinglos and his patriotism is stirred. During tho struggle by Corse |aud his heroes, including West and Law less, Lucus was with Sherman and bolonged to one of tho columns who wont on a run to save tho bravo band and tho millions of money for Uncle Sam. Yoars after tho war closed all three of these men wont to South Dakota and belonged to the G. A. R. At tho Department Encampment in 188G held at Watertown in that State, West and Mrs. Wost were present with a fine baby boy live weeks old, who had not lieeu given a uamo. Tho com rades secured permission te christen and name tho child. In tho Court R oubq iu Watortown, bofore a packed throng, Colonel Lacas, who was De partment Commander then, dedicated tho boy to his country and bestowed upon him tho namo Allatoona Pass West. He is now nearly 17 years old, a fine and promising young rancher iu Montana. At the time of his christening the comrades raised a sum of money and deposited it iu the bank to bo kept invested until tho boy is 21 years of age. Tim a went on. W est migrated and settled at Chotoau, Montana, where he is a rancher. Lawless went still further west and settled ia Tillamook, Oregon. Lucas still livos in the Black Hills of South Dakota. A week ago he came to visit his son and daughter, A. B. Lucas and Mrs.. R. W. Allred, who purchased and live on the Strib- ling ranch, three miles out of town. About the same time Mr. West came to visit his brother, L. C. West, and sister, Mrs. Perry, who live in East Santa Cruz. Mr, Lawless is a. fine optician and in his business travels reached the town a short time before either of the others cam«. On the street Lawless spied and greeted Lucas. West had heard Lucas was iu town and was racing up and down to fiud him, which be succeecod in doing on Monday. Together thoy went to the Santa Cruz Hotel whore the third number of tho triumviate was found. The greeting was one nevor to be forgot ten by those who witnessed it. More than thirty eight years havo gono by since thoy were active actors ia one of the great tragedies of the Civil War. More than sixteen years ago they soparatod in South Dakota drifting far apart. Here in Santa Cruz with out knowledge of each others where abouts or preyious arrangements they moot to renew their friendships. The frost that uover molts has settled on their heads, but thoy rejoice that they live in a country\ which they helped to keep on the map of the world.— Santa Cruz‘(CaI.) Surf. It will be good news to tho mothers of small children to learn that croup can bo prevented. Th<j first sign of croup is hoarseness. A day or two bofore tho attack the child becomes hoarse. This is soon followed by a peculiar rough cough. Give Cham berlain’s Cough Remedy freely as soon as the child becomes hoarso, or eyeu after the rough soughs appears, und it will dispel all symptoms of croup. Iu this way all danger snd anxiety may be avoided. This remedy is used by many thousands of mothers and has uever been known to fail. It is, in fact, ths only remedy that can always be depended upon and that is ploasant and safe to take. For sale by C. H. Drake. Auyertlseot Letter List.
