Cowgill, at his Birdh creek ranch, which took place less than two weeks ago. Last Monday Under Sheriff Ga- nong went to Birch creek, and, following up clews already ob tained by Deputy John Pfeiffer of Dupuper, it required only three or four days to locate the stolen property and have four of the guilty parties under arrest. These parties were brought to Choteau Wednesday evening, a n d on Thursday were taken before Jus tice DeHass for a preliminary hearing, when three of them— Thos. Pepion, John Angell, Jr. and Dennis Boy Chief, all resi dents of the reservation, admitted their guilt and were bound over to the district court, their bail being fixed at $1,000 each. Jay Dixon, the fourth member of the gang, entered a plea of not guilty and waived examination. He was also bound over to the district court. Dixon is not a stranger, to the authorities, having previously served time in the county jail for theft committed at Shelby, and it is almost certain that he is the ring leader of the gang. Since the preliminary he has made ad missions to the officers which should land him in the peniten tiary for a long term. Six of the stolen colts were lo cated at Browning, five more close to the foothills of the mountains west of Browning, and the twelfth one was found dead, having been cut in a wire fence and killed by the gang in making their get-away from the Cowgill ranch. All of the colts were branded with “ maverick’’ brands, three colts each for the four men engaged in the job. The dead colt was brand ed with a brand which is supposed to be claimed by Dixon. The boys are trying to build up a good musical organiza tion for Choteau, and they need money for music, instruments, etc. They ask for no donations or help from anyone, only that everybody in Choteau patronize the dance. Mr. Bair has been a prominent member of the Teton county bar for more than 20 years, and the fact that he is again to give his personal attention to the practice of his profession in this section will be pleasing news to his many clients. He has always “ made good” in past years, which is a splendid criterion to go by for the future. Most People Now Realize . r • .
