Mr. Hickman, division engim er V o t e ; Do women really want the Vote? That is a question of transcendent importance, and it is, as this paper has had occasion to remark before, the very crux of the controversy, and unless or until it can be answered affirmatively by the woman .suffragists, men will either refuse to thrust the vote upon them or do so w ith much reluct ance. Thu« fur the suffragists have not met this issue squarely. On the other hand, the president of the National Association Opposed to Women’s Suffrage, Mrs. A. M. Dodge, asserted in an address :it St. Paul’s Universnlist church the other evening that less than in per cent of the women want the ballot. That is a striking ' state ment. and one wonders what the woman suffragists will have to sa.\ in reply. It may very well he that more than one per cent out of everv ten women in the United 'state* want to vote, but it has never heen demonstrated b.V straw vote or referendum that a majority of women in any community ni ctate expressed a desire for the -ulfrage. If even a bare majority of the gentler sex could bp found to mani fest a sincere longing for the ballot, they would get it in a hurry. But if an overwhelming number of them are either actively opposed to it or indifferent, then why force it upon them. Why do not the* settle it? - St. Paul Dispatch.
