The b r a k e would not hold and the team going at break-neck speed, was pulled out of the road up the hill, but the wafron was not so easily handled. In upsetting a wheel was smashed and things scattered around rather promiscuously. Charley, however held on to the reins and averted a runaway. Duff, treas. of Choteau county is sick with pneumonia, at Benton. During his absence from his office Commissioner Lanning, fills t le position as treasurer. Thursday afternoon Mrs. Chas. W. Gray, wife of Commissioner Gray, had a very narrow escape from death, or at least, great bodily harm. Mr«. Gray had driven in from their ranch, at Belleview, having her little child with her, wrapped up in the bot tom of the buggy. When com ing up the lane on the west side of town, the team became fright ened at some fluttering pieces of paper and a couple of dogs, and started to run. Mrs. Gray kept them in the road until the lane turned into Hamilton street. Here, the turn is very sharp, and near the angle is a narrow bridge, toward which the horses spran r with fresh vigor. One horse and one side of the buggy missed the bridge, throwing the occupants out, tearing off the seat of the buggy and smashing one wheel, and one of the horses had a leg broken by the leap, and later had to be shot.
