Some Tliing-s About It Which Arc not Generally Kuown Special Cot rrespondence. This beautiful liil-le’ city which nestles at the mouth of Bud Rock canyon, from which the Great Northern railroad emerges from the mountains, is one of the phe nomenal creations lately sprung up along the Pacific extension of the above mentioned road. Columbia Falls is built on the west bank of the Flathead river, on a level tract of land, and is sur rounded by as magnificent scenery as ever deligted the eye of man. Lofty mountains flank the city and townsite on the east, the bright green of tbe pines growing at their base forming an agreeable con trast against the showy sides of the hills. On all sides, timber of the finest quality, consisting of pine, spruce, tamarac, and birch, grows in dense bodies, and logging is a lucrative employment. Two saw milis are runuing on full time ^nd^are; being .worked .to their full capacity. Although in the midst of winter, the ring o f the hammer and saw is heard all over the town. The contract for erecting a large and imposing depot has been let, and as tbe Northern Pacific is pre paring to build a branch line from Avon via this place to thè coal mines, 35 miles north, it will un doubtedly be a union depot and an ornament to this place. Main Street, or more properly speaking, Nucleus avenue, is occu pied by the business portion o f the city, and with its substantially constructed brick blocks, shows tbe vim and confidence of the peo- • ‘ tJt ' t- pie. * u p Among tbe so 1 id concernsI*oto’ tbefinn pf;Igallier& Quirk, sale liquor dealers; Bros., dry goods, grocenes^ oud hardware; 11 W. The Railroad \House is a popular resort for wayfarers who like a quiet, orderly place, and Mrs. Miller kuows how to cater to the pajatep o f the hungry. The W ind sor and VaU ey hotels enjoy a good patronage, and several other pub- licadisplay seductive invitations to the traVeler to enter, eat, drink, andbe merry and—put. up. Fred Downer is-prepared to outfiit new ly married people with furniture in all styles. Two drugstores fill the prescriptions oisevaial M.D’s who are daily praying that a case of croup or even a bad cold may appear. P Shu timelier makes sau sage in eleven clillerent styles. K. ReeiJ furnishes liquid refreshments to the thirsty, and cultivates cana ry birds , under blue glass on a strictly prohibition platform. The nobbiest place in town is the mil linery establishment which creat ed those fascinating , headgears surmouting the lovely blonds and brunettes for which this place is famous. Its appointments are un surpassed in elegence. Your correspondent was sur prised to note the demand for la bor, both skilled and common, and the wages paid. Indeed the de mand and and pay is better here than in any section I have visited for some years past. Lots are valuable and getting more so, and situated at the junction of two railroads as the city shortly will be, her dirt, will be very- good property, and'with 1 her immense lumbering and min eral resourcss, she is bound to leave her suburban cousins knee deep in the alkali gumbo, though her rivals say her noteriety is de rived from the number of grass widows, beardless boys and ex school mams, who are holding down property for tbe townsite company. We deny this as a vile slander, and predict a city of no small dimensions in the near fu ture. Like other towns worth mention ing, Columbia Falls has her “ 400,” to whichthe elite belpDg.The vul gar say that this j^sqpiation is « r°- ! -’ thne ladiM r- i- vXTS-VT!\ &mulat* , rules mich the m meefcli apd •rogpPmiaH^tp. c. agree* andaays “ me too.” ' you are to understand that píe of this city tare, not to backwopdsmoh, hobos, or ... ~ ans, butbeings of culture and refinement.
