T H E K ESUI/T. 5 E lection returns are slow in getting in and outside of this par ticular neighborhood nothing defi nite is known. * The national election has result ed disastrously for the republicans. Nearly every doubtiul northern state is reported to have gone for Cleveland and there is no doubt of his election. There are no re ports oh legislative tickets, but it is presumed that they will be democratic also. ' Montana reports are also very slow and only enoughls known to show that the republicans have carried the national, state and leg islative tickets. On the capital # question- Helena is reported to have received first place and Butte second place, Anaconda third, Bozeman fourth and Great Falls fifth place. Choteau county returns are also slow in coming in, but so far as /received show the election of Burns and Leech for the legisla ture, and Barton, Gray and Clary for commissioners. Duff's election over Aspling is reported by tele graph from Benton. Minar is also reported\beaten by O’Neal by a small majority. Miss Guyon is 100 ahead of Miss Finnigan. Moran has a majority of 33 over Ilealy. Powers has a majority of 55 over Tatlan and SI over Murphy. S O M E Q U E R I E S . The name “ Pemberton, William Y .” appeared twice upon the state ticket, once as a democrat and once as a people’s party can didate for the office of chief jus tice, and he received democratic votes and populist votes. In the count are these votes to be count ed as cast—so many for the demo cratic nominee and so many for the people’s party nominee, or are they to be added together as though cast for one nominee? ‘ If neither one of these parties gives a majority for their Mr. Pemberton will lie have been elected, even though their com bined votesshould be greater than that o f Mr. Blake, who is the re publican nominee? I f the democrats and the peo ple’s party had combined should not the two Mr. Pembertons have been consolidated on the ticket if the vote was to be added together at the count? Were these not two and distinct, nominations made—one by the people’s parly and the otjier by the democrats? Was there any attempt at fusion?' * Then why should any be allowed at the count? I f fusion of votes was intended should not there have 'been some action taken before the names were placed on the official ballott? By what authority can the dem ocratic nominee claim the vote of the people’s party nominee*' and vice versa? These are potent questions, and, should the attempt be made to count out Blake by fusion at this late day, a contest will be the re sult. THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION. (B y the President.) The gifts of God to our people ’ during the past year have been so ubundant and so special that the spirit of devout thanksgiving await not the call, but only the appointment of a day when it may have common expression. H e has stayed the pestilence at our doors; Helias given us more love for free civil instructions, in the creation of which His directing providence has been so conspicuous. • He has, awakened a deeper reverence for the laws; He has widened our philanthrophy by a call to succor distress in other lands. He has blessed our schools and is bringing forward a patriotic and God-fearing generation to execute His great benevolent, designs for our coun try. He has given us a great in crease in material wealth and the wide diffusion of contentment and comfort in the homes of our peo ple. H e has given His grace to the sorrowing. Now, therefore, I Benjamin Harrison, president of the United States, do call upon all our people to observed, as has been our wont to observe, Thursday, the 24th of November, as a day of thanksgiv ing to God for His mercies and supplication for His continued care and grace.
