Wolves Are Numerous. Wolves are becoming numerous and troublesome along the lower Judith range, so much so that an extra bounty has been placed upon their pelts by stockmen of that legion, to furnish inducement toward extermination of the var mints. Last week William Simp son, Samuel Winslow and Heze- kiah Wilson, cowboys, residents of that section, started to round up a large band of these animals that had been playing'Buch havoc with their young stock. Gaining ad vantage by driving the marauders into a rocky canyon, bullets flew thick and fast until the entire number were supposed to be slain. Skinning went merrily on until one of the victims, evidently an extra tough customer, was reach ed and which showed signs of re turning vitality. To save ammu nit ion, Wilson placed a rope around the wolf’s neck, dragged him over the rough ground fifteen or twenty minutes, and returned with the limp form. Dismount ing, Hezekiah placed himself astride his prey, looking toward the south, and had loosened the hide from it hind legs and par tially up the back, when the wolf, who had in the meantime 6ome what recovered, opened his eyes, saw who was sitting on him, gave a series of quick, shap nips be neath his keep’s coatails, which sent ’Z^ke into space with a howl and gave to himself once move the priceless boon of liberty, and which the latter was not slow to appreciate, for v\ hen ’Zeke had fin ished easing liitnself and fle d about it was only to see his old enemy making for the foothills at lightning speed, the loosened hide flapping over its back with every bound.—Helena Herald. Balloting for U. S. Senator. [Anaconda Standard.J The scene in the house is im pressive as the hour for the assem blingof the joint body comes. A1 business suspended, there is the expectant hush which tells of the coming of an event and then, the doors thrown open, the sergeant-at-arms advancing down the aisle announces in ringing tones (he arrival of tke honorable senate. The members rising, the gentlemen composing the upper house file down to their seats, pre ceded by the wheeled chair of the lieutenant governor. All seated, the sonorous tones of the clerk echo the call oi the roll, and the voice of the president, clear as a bell, repeats the refrain, now grown familiar to our ears for many days, “ The gentlemen of the joint assembly will now proceed to cast a vote for a senator in con gress.” The suspense has some times been painful, as surprises have so far been the distinguish ing feature of the session, and a sensation is waited for in morbid expectancy. Rusk’s Cure For Lumpy Jaw. “ Unele” Jerry Rusk will have well and faithfully earned his sal ary as secretary of the interior, even though there should be noth ing more placed to his credit than the discovery of a simple and in expensive remedy for lumpy jaw ed cattle. Dr. Salmon, chief of the bureau of animal industry, re ports to the secretary from Chica go, after making numerous experi ments and investigations, that the remedy tried, iodide of potassium, is a remakable success, 63 per cent, of the cattle treated having been cured. The report shows the cost of treatment trifling by comparison with the results, and it has also been proved that the disease is not contagious.—Avant Courier.
