CBÜ D ied . Tiie house in which Mr. Blaine died^No. Iff Madison Place (or La Payette Square, as it is also call* ed), ha* a history as interesting and as varied as that of the dis* tingunhed statesman it has shel tef$d,.. It has been in turn dwell ing house, boarding house, gov eritment office, and twice the home of-the premier of the . administra tion. President Polk lived in it ouce four months while repairs were being made in’ the white house. Secretary of State Seward also made it his home for quite a while, during which it was the so cial headquarters of the wealth and distinction of the capital. On the night of the attempted assassi nation of Mr. Seward in this same house a scene of horror was enact ed there the memory of which is •till fresh in many minds T! o house has seen years of hard ser vice as a government office. Its eonvenient location, however, was such an important thing in Mr. Blaine’s eyes that he forgot a 1 other considerations and expend ed a great deal of money to make the house suitable for his family’s occupancy/ It was favorably lo cated to get plenty oi sunshine and to view from its windows much of the busy life of the city. On one side of the hall is a smad reception room, and it was there that Mr. Blaine used to see his callers. The room back of that was private office in the old cabinet days. The windows over« looked Pen tiny lv hu i a avenue ami its passing crowds. The furniture thioughout the house is in liar many with the colonial style pre dominating-in irs aiehiteeturo. A good deal of it was brought from the old Augusta home ol the fam ily; There are many fine pictures cm the walls, some that Mr. Blaine bought during his last visit to Eu rope, and a number of old engrav iirjga and prints that they had hung in their other homes.—Washing tou Latter.
