Chicago, solidly republican. ‘ Clean Sweep. N ew Y ork , N ov . S.—The elec tion in this state is a clean sweep for the republicans and every hour adds to the thoroughness of democratic defeat. Bartlett’s ma jority forjudge of the court of ap peals over Maynard is in round figures 89,700. ' Gen. Palmer’s majority for secretary of state is 85,000. ‘ The Largest. C olumbus , O., Noy. 8.—The latest estimaies on thé state at republican headquarter* indicate that McKinley carrièd the state by between 70,000 and 80,000 plu rality, thé largest in the history of the state.since 1863, when Brough had over lOO^OOQ, over Vallandig:. ham. Chillicothe, the home of Neal, McKinley’s opponent, went republican for the first time. The legislature will be republican by about two-thirds in both houses. At democratic state headquarters the result is conceded. More than Last Year. . D es M oines , Iowa, Nov. 8.— ¡Frank D. Jackson, republican, for governor, ' i*. elected by about 30,000 plurality, ?jqr. 6,000 more than Harrison got for president in 1892. The rest of the republican ticket is elected by large plural ities. ■ ■ Massachusetts. B oston ,’ Nov. 8.—As a result of the election in - Massachusetts for the first time in years the state will have a republican governor, as his plurality is 30,000. The rest of the ticket is elected with him and the legislature is solidly republican in both houses. The prohibitionist vote did not differ from last year’s, but the populists managed to add a little to theirs. The labor vote was insignificant. re- overwhelming Tn Kansa*. P hiladelphia , N ov . 8.—Penn sylvania elected a republican su preme court justice by probably 80.000. Colorado. D enver ,. N ov . 8.—The slate is almost entirely republican in the county elections. Equal suffrage carries. Ollier States. Kentucky, Virginia and Mary- , land went democratic by their usual majorities. Chicago. C hicago , N ov . 8.— Re turns indi cate the election of the entire re publican ticket, with the possible- exception of Kraft. Judge Gary is elected by 8,000 or more, and leads the rest of the ticket by 2,000 or 4,000. will replace her uncovered paper money with silver to be' used for subsidiary coin. 'A t the .present the amount of silver in use in Russia is not 53 cents pey capita. Russia has $500,000,000. uncovered paper, or about $442 per capita. It is staled here that Russia can easily absorb $260,000,- 000 silver and is desirous of doing so for the purpose of pushing her commerce in the East with Persia. India and China, which use silver almost exclusively as money. Treasury advices ,say the. price of silver continues to advance in London. The price to day is 35 9 16 pence, an advance of 3 16 of a penny since yesterday. W ashington , N ov . 4.—A num ber of officers in* citizens’ dress have been deiailed to guard the white house and protect the life of the president, which is suppos ed to be in danger from a murder ous crank who is at large in this city. W ashington , N ov . 7.—The opin ion is expressed here that the cause for the continued rise in sil ver in London during past ‘few days is due in part,to a belief that the government; of Russia is con templating the step of adopting silver as a part of her menetary system. It is, said tbat intimations have been received here by gov ernment officials that Russia W ashington ,’ Nov. 4.—The, pop ulist members of congress to-day issued an,address appealing to the If is'significant that the name of Senator Jones of Nevada appears among the signers of the docu ment. Fired on the Flag. N ew Y ork , N ov . 6.—The Her ald’s La Libertad, Honduras, dis patch says: Honduras fired upon the American flag this morning. By alleged orders of President Vasquez and by express command of the commandant of the port of Amahla, several shots were fired after the Pacific Mail steamship Costa Rica, flying the stars and stripes, as she steamed away, be cause she refused to surrender one of her passengers to the Honduras government. United States Min ister Baker was on board the Costa Rica at the time. - Gas in Montana. F t . A ssinniboine ; Mont., Nov. 8.—W. N. Carey & Sons, of St. Paul, who are drilling a well here under contract for the govern ment, have found gas at a depth of about 800 feet.
