Carr, of Choteau, has invented what ho terme a “ steam placer miner,” for use in frozen ground. Last week he made a practical test in the presence of witnesses, with the result that his most □anguine expectations were more than re alized. He succeeded in cutting away 18 inches of the hardest kind of frozen clay and gravel in one hour, by a watch. Mr. Carr, along with his witnessds and sovoral others, to whom he has confided the se crets of his apparatus, is firmly convinced that he has gotten rid of the difficulty ex perienced by the Klondyke miners in the way of getting out pay dirt. Purely Personal. January 4,1898. Very pleasant weather. Stockmen re port the range in good condition and stock, doing well. The train southbound was eight hours late owing to heating of the running gear. A crew of men are side tracked on the Dry Forks* about'eight miles north of here, for the purpose of repairing bridges. Mr. Zimmerman has been very successful in finding a splendid sup ply of water in every- well put down in this vicinity. In one well the water lose to within ten feet of the surfface. There are already four windmills here which will be erected in the next week or ten days. \ Messrs. We congratulate them on having secured a good location and wish them much success. Mr. Trucliot’s teams are hauling lum ber, furniture, etc., from hero to the Mud dy. It is reported from reliable authority tliat a station house and shearing sheds will be erected here next spring by tho G. F. & C. By.
