Volume 59 I n Retrospect 25 YEARS AGO From the Examiner Nov. 6, 1924. The Republicans swept into power in Tuesday’s election, tak ing all major state and national offices with the exception of Erickson for governor. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Schwartz each got their deer while hunting near Grant last week. Montana, financially and in a ¡business way, in common with most northwest states, is rapidly emerging from its period of de pression. 24 YEARS AGO From the Examiner Nov. 11, 1925 Schulz & Son of Sheridan re ceived $16 per head for 500 head of Ramboullet ewes this week, which is the highest price on rec ord in this section. Dillon is the lowest taxed mu nicipality in Montana with a levy of 12.5 mills, according to the fig-, ures compiled iby a state agency. W. G. Gilbert has returned from a ¡business trip to Chicago and other eastern cities. A wee .winsome ¡baby girl was born last Thursday to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stamm, She has been named Patricia. NELLIE McFADDEN, Public Administratrix of Beaverhead County, Mon tana, and Administratrix of the Estate of Gertrude Buck, deceased'. 16-4t 23 YEARS AGO (From the Examiner Nov. 10,1926 With complete returns from every precinct in the county, the final count Shows that the demo cratic party in Beaverhead coun ty had things very much their own way in the general election. ¡Beaverhead was one of the 53 counties of the state that received more money than it paid to the state of Montana in taxes. The county contributed $39,925.35 and received as its share of state money $44,149.50. As a service to veterans in the community, this newspaper will publish a weekly column of questions most frequently asked contact men of the Veterans Administration in this area. For more detailed information, vet erans should contact or write to the nearest VA contact unit. VETERANS INDEBTED TO VA MAY HAVE DEBT DEDUCTED Some Montana veterans may find all or part of their share of the forthcoming special dividend payment on National Service Life Insurance deducted because they owe the government money as. a result of overpayments on sub sistence allowances or other vet eran benefits, the Veterans Ad- minstration reports. Approximately 600,000 veterans are currently indebted to the VA for a total of about 70 million dollars. The VA estimated that somewhere between 20 and 30 million dollars of such debts may be collected from NSLI dividends. Bulk of the money owed the VA constitutes overpayments on subsistence allowances for veter ans taking educational courses or training under the Gi.1. Bill. Oth er types of indebtedness are over payments on pension, compensa tion or readjustment allowances, and losses made good to lenders on defaulted G.I. loans. All of the veterans concerned are aware of their indebtedness to the government and know that it is deductible from other VA * i ¥ e n e { ( • « M l • M M I H I I I t . A consider able number of veterans are now repaying indebtedness by having deductions from their monthly checks. When the overpayment is wiped out, as it may be by the dividend deductions, there will be no further monthly withholding. Question of the Week Q. I read somewhere that World War II veterans will get their NSLI dividend checks before Christmas. Can you tell me when I will get my NSLI dividend check? A. There is no possibility that any NSLI dividend checks will be mailed 'before January, 1950. About the middle of January the checks will be going out at the rate of 200,000 a day.
