Chairman of the Board •4-3t NOTICE OF SALE The Bbard of County Commis- isioners |of Beaverhead County, NATIONAL FARM SAFETY , WEEK JULY 22 to 28 July 22 to 28 is National Farm Safety week. As a preliminary to that I want to briefly call your attention to a few facts about farm accidents in Montana. About the only figures that are available on- farm and ranch ac cidents in ' the state ,are those gathered by the Montana Indus trial Accident Board. And of course the .board’s figures- cover only those farm employers who are enrolled under the Workmen’s Compensation Act. However, even these limited data provide some interesting information. Last year, for example, 652 farm employers reported 1100 ac cidents to the board and it is of interest to learn what caused many of these mishaps. It may be surprising to you that most of these accidents involved not farm machinery but farm animals. Of the. 1100 accidents .reported, 241 involved farm animals. Ninety- four persons either fell, from a horse or were on a horse that fell. Forty-six' injuries resulted from people being kicked by animals. And — even in this day and age —-■ there were five runaways in which people were injured. Injuries involving m a c h i n e s numbered 136 and about the same number of injuries were the re sult of unsafe working surfaces. These were mainly falls. Hand tools accounted for 112 injuries , and vehicle mishaps caused 94'in- •’ juries. o So, on the basis of the figures from the State Industrial Acci dent Board, it would seem that our safety efforts could well put greater stress on being careful in working around animals and also around machinery.' A study of.' the time of day when these accidents occurred . shows that the hour from 10 to 11 o’clock, in the morning was the most hazardous. - Council will'meet on Wednesday tttq 1st day of August, A. A y Joe Marsh Confused ^Sit\-uation Been meaning all week to tell you about Curley Lawson’s “baby sitting” experience. His Mrs. left him in charge, about seven p.m., with instruc tions not to let the children come downstairs. So Curley read his paper and whenever he heard footsteps on the staircase he or dered the culprit back to bed. Happened three or four times. Little while later, Mrs. Miller from next door came over to in quire if Curley had seen her Sonny. “Here I am, Mom” came a voice from upstairs, “But Mr. Lawson won’t let me go home.” From where I sit, jumping to conclusions like Curley did, doesn’t always make for an amus ing story. I’m reminded of the people who—without due consid- eration—have concluded that I'm wrong to like an occasional glass of beer. Well, to my way of think ing, that’s not only intolerant... but, what’s more, “minding” the other fellow’s business is not the American way. Copyright, 1956, United States Brewers Foundation
