This is a situation be coming rampant throughout our nation. • • • SUCH OCCURANCES h a v e prom p ted many life-long fans in to a self-im p osed boycott on bas ketball and, as the man said, is em p tying gym seats faster than the good coaches and players can fill them. • • • A CHECK o f games disgraced by these blood-letting episodes could prove interesting insofar as dis closing if certain whistle blowers are prone to such debacles. O ffi cials’ associations would do well to look into this phase ty! the game — b e fore all the seats becom e va cated. • • • A N D THEN there's the zone defense— the one sure way to eliminate the beautifully intri cate moves of basketball, which are exactly what the fans shell out ticket money to see. • • • AN AM A Z ING INVENTION designed1 t o keep ten talented and highly-trained players from doing what they spend years learning to do, the zone is rapidly becom ing one o f sport’s m o st assinine fflrrog • • • THE AVERAG E FLOOR on courts throughout this area measures roughly 50 feet wide. Put five rangy athletes into zone patterns within this lim ited space and, if p r o p e r l y trained, they'll drive a good team to drink— and the fans to fren zies of frustration. • • • CHECK THE SCORES o f any weekend play. You’ll find many teams getting less than 40 points per game. Check a little closer and you 'll discover that one or both squads used zone9—and that the fans either went to sleep or 5 5 - 3 8 . The win snapped a five-gam e losing streak and moved the Beav ers into an early conference lead with Deer Lodge, 51-31 winners over Anaconda Central. Saturday’s opener saw the Beav ers shoot t o 6-0 and 12-2 leads over the Rams on a com bination o f bal anced team play and a pressing m an-to-m an defense. Loyola, down 25-15 at halftim e, caught fire early in the third quar ter and closed the gap t o 25-23 be fore the Beavers recovered and took command via the fine all- around play o f forwards Pierce Rouse and Jon W omack. Leading 36-28 after three quar ters, D illon displayed its season’s top form to m ove out 47-31 after three minutes of the final stanza. A ll five Beaver starters scored w e ll with Jon W om ack leading the basket barrage with 16 points. Rouse follow ed with 12; Jerry Don ovan, who is developing into one o f the Beavers’ best boardmen, had 10; Jim W om ack 9 and Ed Fer ris 8. Ed Steiner was high fo r the Rams with 16 and Russ Pilcher added 10. The loss evened Loyola’s loop m ark at 1-1. In the prelim inary, Anaconda’s jayvees held o f f a late Beaver JV surge t o take a narrow 41-38 thrill er. Butte Central 49, Dillon 39 Butte Central’s A A M aroons came up with a strong fourth per iod to turn back a stubborn Beav er five, 49-39, at the School of Mines gym Friday night. Perform ing before a crow d o f 1100, the Beavers m atched Central throughout three quarters but were outgunned, 13-7, in the fatal fourth, after an all-even 22-22 first half. Ed Ferris and Jon W om ack posted 11 and 10 m a rkers f o r the visiting Beavers while Pierce Rouse and Jerry Donovan m atched their taller opponents on the boards. The loss was Dillon’ s fifth in a row —all to Idaho and Montana home before the third quarter was w ell underway. • • • THERE I S NOTHING m ore dis concerting to the player or more boring t o the spectator. Yet its use is gaining momentum with each new season. A s Beaver Boss M ax Nield told me recently, “I hate it, but I may have to go to it in self defense.” • • • THE PROS quickly discovered that the zone was a fan-killer and promptly outlawed It. Col lege and high school officials' may soon face the same decision. As far as this corner Is con cerned, we hope that day comes soon. A A clubs—but gained the hustling Beavers both praise and respect from Butte fans and sportswriters. Big Timber Next’ The Big Timber Sheepherders, coached by form e r Sheridan great Eddie Berquist, m ove into D illon fo r a pair o f non-conference bat tles Friday and Saturday. Friday’s contest w ill be played at the WMCE gym in a feature at traction which also pits W estern against the outstanding W e b e r Col lege quintet o f Ogden, Utah.
