He said the same kinds of approaches could work here to prevent drug and alcohol abuse. : Programs which worked ■well in Minnesota included: —The establishment of crisis homes where young people were placed when their families could no long er deal with them. Young sters and their families received counseling from trained persons after place ment. Although families were paid small amounts to participate, volunteers could help establish a similar system. —Organization of class es helped teach parents how to set limits for their chil dren. Pointing out program wcxkers believed in struc tured schools and families, Ableidinger said parents were shown they could more effectively discip line their children by out lining consequences than in threatening punishment. —Promotion of under standing about what the consequences of drug or alcohol abuse—or other un desirable behavior—can be. Abledinger said young peo ple seemed strongly influ enced by discussion groups in which, for instance, law enforcement officers ex plained what happened to persons arrested for drunk driving. —Encouragement of act ivities like marriage court- seling education sessions for ministers. Drug and alcohol abuse are symp toms of a “community sick ness” Ableidinger said, and that sickness can be com bated through promotion of a healthy family. —Promotion of activities in which yoirng people could become involved in the community and achieve feelings of self-worth. Lone liness and feelings of worth lessness contribute both to abuse and to delinquency, he said. (From page B -l] Abledinger said activi ties can be as varried as the ideas people in a commun ity can think of. He repeated, though, that a paid, full-time coor dinator may be necessary to help a prevention pro gram get off the ground. “The problem is, he ad mitted, that it’s sometimes existing to fund hard to convince exist local gov« something which has bene fits so hard to measure.” Never-the-less such fund ing is necessary, Ableding er contended, adding there might be a person or organ ization in the community who might know sources of grants or private money, which could finance the pro gram. Tri-County counselor Dale Samuel said as a result of the workshop several persons have volun teered to be members of a prevention task force. He said the Friday lunch eon is planned to help guage community response to the idea of forming a pre vention program. “Without community support a program like tins is, for all practical purpos es, dead,” Abledinger said.
