Sofia, Bulgaria, Sept 1.—In both official and revolutionary circles the opinion Is freely held that war between Bulgaria and Turkey is* imminent and can be averted by nothing short of a miracle. It is not expected that either government will formally declare hos tilities. but that the prevailing condi tions will force on a war. There Is no question that large numbers of surgents have recenily crossed the frontier. An extensive outbreak. In northern Macedonia is possible at any time. The Autonomy prints a tele gram from Constantinople declaring that the sultan, Influenced by the con suls of Germany, now favors war with Bulgaria. Tfie Turks here, however, take an‘optimistic view, asserting that there Is no danger of a war, as Turaey does not desire one and Prince Ferdi nand and the present Bulgarian gov ernment are not in a position to force hostilities. The Bulgarian agent at Uskub re ports that detachments of Turkish troops sent to garrison the towns in that vilayet have spread destruction along their route; the villagers have been robbed and* beaten, the women violated and the Christian population subjected to every conceivable out rage, while the local authorities ap pear to be helpless to stop the atro cities. At the village of Drachme, six n'lles from Uskub, the.soldlers attack ed all the peasants without the gen ii lrmes Interfering on behalf of the latter. The Bulgarian agent specifies similar excesses In many other villages and the position of the Bulgarian resi dents Is reported to be terrible, cruelties committed by Turkish au thorities exceeded all limits.
