Mrs. Mary E.Jahn and her 3 year old daughter Pearl died recently from burns caused by lighted gasolene, and Harry, the 10 year old son of tho woman, is also fatally burned. The boy had been in the habit of helping his mother about the stove during the day. He was a somnambulist and dur ing the night he went through the op eration of turning on and lighting the stove In his sleep. A Are resulted and Mrs. Jahn and Pearl ran to the boy’s aid. Manager Collins o f the Boston Amer ican league team announces that a series of nine games for the world's championship between Boston, cham pions of the American league, and Pi.ttsburg, champions of the National, nhs been arranged, the series to be- n In Boston about October 1, and to xmslst of four games In each -city, with a ninth game here or at Pitts burg In case of a tie resulting. After shooting and fatally wounding Chief of Police Fred Heuke and Cap tain Brennecke of the police depart ment and seriously wounding Frank Lutz, a councilman of Boonevllle, Ind., Detective Thomas Hutchens recently shot and killed himself. The tragedy was the result of a long existing quar rel between Brennecke and Hutchens. The cause Is not known. The shoot ing occurred In a tent at the trlstate fair grounds in the presence of 600 people. Neither Chief--- Heuke nor Captain Brennecke had opportunity to defend themselves. Professor and Mrs. C. V. Piper have left Pullman, Wash., for Washington, D. Fatal Firs at Pine City, Wash— Fire Started From Gasoline Explosion. Pine City, Wash., SepL 23.—At the risk of their own Uvea and sustaining burns whloh may prove fatal In .se, John Higgs and Dr. Angus of Pine City saved the Invalid wife of Mr. Higgs and his little daughter from the flames of a burning house. ~ JsplWs the brave work of Dr. An gus, w m carried the little girl out In his arms, the child was so badly burn ed'that she died later. Dr. Angus also received such serious burns that his condition Is critical. The fire started from a gasoline explosion. Mrs. Higgs la In delicate health and her husband and the fam ily physician were giving her a vapor bath, using gasoline. The substance exploded and In a moment the room was a mass of flames. The doctor called upon. Higgs to save hla wife and then made a dash for an upstairs room where two little children were sleeping. Hastily rous ing (he boy, the doctor assisted him wrap himself up and flee down the stairs and from the burning build ing. Dr. Angus then picked up the little girl and started out. By this time the wholg house was In flames and with great 'difficulty the man made his escape, bearing his human Durden. Mrs. Higgs received severe burns and this, with her terrible fright and illness, makes her recovery most doubtful. WHEAT YIELD OF WASHINGTON. Commissioner Arrasmlth Estimates at - Twsnty Million Bushels. State Grain Gommlsaloner Arrasmlth says: “The average yield of the lands of the state 18 low, but owing to the superior prices this year the net re turns to the grower will be nearly equal to that of last year. Supposing the grain to be all saved, the yield will average about 18 bushels to the acre, taking one section of the state with another. The estimate tnr th* State would, therefore, be from 20,000,- 000 .to fTOOO.OOO bushels. Last year the yield was between 26,000,000 and 27,000,000 bushels, quite a falling off for this year, when the additional acreage ls^aken Into account \This year the farmers of the ex treme eastern portions o f the state are being offered 65 to 75 cents, so that the loss in yield 4s made up to the farmer by the additional price. This means about 614.000,000 of money to be dis tributed In the eastern part of the state from the wheat source alone, and this outside of the freight paid the rail way companies. ‘As a consequence of the high prices 1 think- there Is no question but the coming year will show an unparalleled Increase in the wheat acreage In this state.” Colonel Underwood le Dead. Portland, Ore., SepL 23.—Colonel J. M. Underwood, well known as a rail road constructor and foynerly a mem ber of -the Minnesota legislature. Is dead at his residence In Portland at the age of 61. Colonel Underwood was horn at Saco,' Me. During the civil war he served as a lieutenant In the Maine artillery. His title of colonel came later, when he served on the staff of the governor of Minne sota. TRADE REPORT. R. G. Cynthlan, Ky., SepL 24.—After a trial lasting eight days the Jury In the case of Curtis Jett, charged with the murder of Town Marshal Cockrill at Jackson, K y , July 21, 1902, rendered a verdict of guilty and fixed the pun ishment at death. Gould, a Free Methodist preach er, who eloped with Eva Grant, n 16 ] year old girl last March, has been sen tenced to six years In the penitentiary.
