The editor and proprietor of The Col ombian bows to the people of Colum bia Falla, and flatters himself that he i> no stranger here. He worked on The Colombian when John W. Pnce wi editor and’proprietor, and before he re paired the eervicee of a tonsorial artist \ to keep his'fnce smooth. Since he wss ■here he has been engaged in newspaper work, ami after an apprenticeship o f seventeen years, feels thst he petent to edit and publish a paper that will be helpfull in promoting the best interests of-such a community as is cen tered in and about Columbia Falla. 'The Colombian believes in the aggres sive republicanism of President Roo veil, and therefore will he republican : jn politics. According to its light, Preai- , dent Roueovelt ha» not nnVr given ample proof of hi» friendship for the west, based upon a thorough knowledge of its wants and conditions, bnt, has shown Aliat broad itatuamuusbip and executive . ability so essential to convert theory in to fact. The present generation will ._not appreciate the Importance of the system of national irrigation inangur- a ted and put Into operation by Presi dent Roosevelt. The Isthmian canal, ,now tinder construction, in itself ii sufficient to mark an epoch ir American history. Its effect npon the growth and pronperity of the weet in the .next generation will eclipse'that of the Lonisiana purchase. But, above and be yond these schemes, which under Roose velt, have been taken from the realms of conjecture and fancy, and are being converted into fact, is the attitude of tins president in the administration ofiaw He stands opposed to the theory that public office is a private snap. He is -making Unclear to the American people that he is not contented to he the presi dent of the republican party merely, - but, that he desires to be the president ,o f Ills American people. The country in iu development has . reached n crisis and newts i lie firm strong hand of Roosevelt, guided By an eoligbt- ened conscience to steer the ship of stale through the transition period. He does not need to be a philosophpi X i see that a transition period is at hand. f. That the principle of self government by the people must either be ahandoped or i re-aseerted.
