\ ' Ala^ 1- a.. • • \?.. ..7_:--teret- • • VOL. 6. GEYSER, MONT., JULY Li, 4916 How Statistics are Obtained Nearly 770,000 persons: . largely sue- gessful farmers, are now aiding the department by furnishing information, demonAtrating the local usefulness ot new methods, testing out theories, ex- perimenting and reporting Qn condi- tions in their districts—by helping, in short, in almost every conceivable way to increase the knowledge of the de- partmeat and to place that knowledge at the service of the people. This army of volunteers receives no pay from the Government.. Many of these cooperators are actuated solely by a wish to be of service to their neighbors. Others take part in this work because of their own keen interest in testing new methods, or in trying out for them- selves crops either new to their own sections or imported from foreign coustries through the department's plant explorers. It is estimated that at least one farm out of every twenty is working in some way with the department and thus has become a center of advanced agricultural information for its cont• mtmity. In addition to the farmers who work directly with the department there are thousand's of others who ren- der a similar service to the scientist and geld workers of the State agricul tura colleges aad experiment stations. With such a large number of farm- ers willing to work with the depart meta and the colleges and test out tho•ir recommendations, it Is clear that a significant change has taken place from the day when the average farm- er was decidedly skeptical about the scientific agriculture and slow or up - willing to give attention to the recom- mendations of what many used It, designate as \book farmers.\ The wide use made by the depart- ment of,, this large number of Fee- tieel farmers indicates clearly how er- roneouw Wks the once prevalent idea that agricultural scientists held them- selves aloof and that the department consist ed Mainly of eollege•trained men, who were far more at home in their offices or lahroatoriea than on actual farms. It is true the scienti- fie agriculturist may develop ideas in his laboratory, but before he is ready to advise farmers to adopt them he tries them out in actual practice on Government farms, and then calls on a large number of successful practical farmers to give these ideas an inde- pendent practical test on some of their own acres. In other cases he staadies and analyzes the practice of hundred. , or thousands of successful farmers in tional and world-wide c lit 1.114' that regulitte lousiness.
