INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOPIC —Life's Decisions YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADMir TOPIC —The Power of Personal influence. casion of Ruth's Choice. n hccount of the famine In Beth- lehemsludea. Naomi with her husband anti two sons sojourned in the land of Moab. After the death of her hus- band, her two sons married Moabitish women. After n time her sons died also. Upon the death of her sons she resolved to return to her homeland, having heard that the Lord had visit- ed his people in giving them bread. Her family went to Moub to escape trouble, but they only got into more trouble. It was not till Naomi- was thus chastised that she resolved to re- turn. She had the good sense to recognize that the hand of the Lord was upon her for good. Ruth and Or- pah accompunied her. This she per- mitted. hut determined to place before them frankly the difficulties which would necessarily confront them. It was MS frank presentation of. the difficulties and her repented lusting them to go hack that furnished the occasion for Ruth's wise choice. II. The Trials of Ruth's Choice (vv. 16-1 ). Much as Naomi loved her daughters - ti -law, she WOUIII not have them go Imo iii Is matter blindly. She wished them to know the cost of their ender - taking. She told tlwin the worst that could come upon them, then if hard- ships came they could only blame themseIVOL Note the difficulties width confront- ed Ruth: I. Ni) chance to get married again. Naomi told her that she had no more sons for which she could wait. In th»t day to be unmarried was the greatest disgrace. Furthermore. it wits against God's law for the Jews to marry out- side of their own people. 2. Site must renounce her gods. iler Idolatrone worship could not be carried on in the land where God's people dwelt. This was delicately touched upon when Orpnh went hack (v. 15). Orpali went beck when it was plain that there was no chance to get a hus- band. Now Natimi puts an additional test upon Ruth, that of giving up her religion. Naomi's very frankness in dealing with her caused RMII to be more and more determined to cast her lot with her. No doubt she learned to love the true God through the life of —.4 ***.s.....tht true woman. Site was deter- mined to share Nnond's journey, her home, her lodging, her lot In life and her grave in death, whatever that would be. To crown It all site would renounce her heathen gods nnd em- brace Jehovah. When Naomi saw that Ruth's mind was fully made up she quit urging her. The Glorious Issue of Ruth's Choice. Ruth was never sorry for her choice, for: 1. She found the true God (v. 16). — 2. She found human fere - fide (eh; 2). As she went to glean In the fields she was led to the field of Boaz—n man of wealth and grace. The servants of Boaz treated tier with consideration ; even Boaz gay% instruction for special consideration I t be given her. 3. A good husband and a happy home' (chaps. 8 and 4). She not only se- cured a husband, but a man of God, who had abundance of this world's goods. 4. An honored place In the Israel- itish 'tuition (4:13-17). Though she had to forsnke her own people, she became one of a nobler people. 5. She became a link in the chnln of Christ's ancestry (4:18-22; cf. Mate 1:5). The one who fully decides for Christ and gives up all for him shall get a hundredfold In thls life and In the world to come; eternal life. This story is a fine exhibition of dis- pensational truth: (1) The famine in the hunt indicates the testing of the Jews; (2) the going Into Moab, 'the .sojourn of the Isrnel- lies among the nations; (3) sickness nod death In Moth, thechnstisement of the Jews in this present age; (4) the return to the land, the gathering of Israel to their own land; (5) Roil? tot lowing, the gathering of the Gentiles through the influence Of the Jews: (6) the marriage between Boaz and Ruth, the union of the church with Christ. Faith in God. If your faith In God is stronger for every humble task in which you need and get his all then that humble task Is necessary to the fullness of your faith in God. It will make•the MUSIC of your life more firm and solid.— Phillips Brooks. Loom of Life Never Stops. BIG REDUCTION IN CHOLERA Decrease In Swine Losa of 72 Per Cent Noted in Six Counties in North Carolina. (Prepared by the United States Depart- ment of Agriculture.) An example of the benefit which may conic to a community from the well -directed efforts of state and fed- eral agencies, coupled with the co-op- eration of farmers, for the control of hog cholera is shown in a recent re- port of a veterinary inspector of the bureau of animal industry. Hog cholera control work was In- augurated in six counties in the north- eastern section of North Carolina Au- gust 1, 1016. An intensive campaign was carried on for a period of 14 months. It included investigation of reported outbreaks, demonstrations in the use of serum and virus, and the disinfection of premises. As the services of practicing veterinarians were not available, a number of lay- men were trained In the administra- tion of the serum treatment for chol- era. After that period of intensive activities the work was withdrawn to another section of the state, only gew eral Supervision being given to the Original area. During October a survey was made of the counties comprising the district in question, and a questionnaire was submitted to as many of the farmers as could be reached. Answers te- calved and tabulated indicate 'that there has been a reduction in losses front cholera of over 72 per cent, and an increase of over 160 per cent In swine production, due to the protec- tion offered by the Immunization of the animals. There has also been a Shoulder Injection for Hog Cholera. marked improvement In the type of this class of animals, due to the knowledge that it is possible to raise mere and better hogs without danger of having them destroyed by cholera. BRONCHITIS IN LITTLE PIGS Not Much Can Be Done in Way of Treatment—Damp, Cold Pens Are Cause of Trouble. Bronchitis most commonly occurs In young pigs. Matured hogs are seldom troubled with it. If It attacks very young pigs it often proves fatal, but pigs two or three months old will gen- erally survive, though their growth may be seriously interfered with. The disease is accompanied by a distress- ing coligh, which usually disappears with the advent of warm weather and outdoor exercise. Little can be done in the way of treatment. Dry pens free from drofts, nourishing feed and as much exercise as possible are the principal points to be observed. Damp, cold pens are the most common cause of this trouble. MORE HOGS ARE NEEDED NOW Every Farmer Must Put Forth Best Endeavors to Produce More Pork This SCR,1011. If we expect to continue to provide meat to foreign peoples as well as our own people, every farmer must put forth his best effort to produce more hogs. Hogs can be kept profitably upon many farms where they are not found today. Farmers who already produce hogs can produce more, for there is not much chance of producing meat this year in excess of the re. quIrements. FEED LIVE STOCK LIBERALLY Farmer Should Make it a Rule to Keep No More Animals Than He Can Feed Well. Make it a golden rule to keep no more stock on the farm than you have enough feed to sumiy liberally. Sell off the others, evsn though it seems a sacrifice. For there is on sacriflco equal to that which comes from stunted live stock. Lift off Corns! noesn't butt a bit and PrearOn0 costs only a few cents. Wit I your fingers!
