Should he conclude to locate heie, he will re- ceive a royal welcome. J. D. Caldwell, of Butte, was in our burg last week. He was looking after his insurance business. He was a welcome visitor, andwas entertained by Chas. Stuart, the druggist, and Hank Merrill, the painter. John D. Mallett, of the Black Hawk mine, is taking out ore and will make a sshipment the first of e year. John Deitch, a partner of Mallett's, was out from Upper Basin last week and made arrangements for pushing work on the Black Hawk. M. Reinig, the popular grocery man of lielena,was in Wickes Tuesday,leav- ing for Boulder in the afternoon. Mr. Weinig has a large trade in this and surrounding - camps. He says business is picking up rapidly, and that he has the most extensive trade to which he has catered for many years. H. 0. Blevins. of Elkhorn, spent a few days in Wickes last week. They will begin shipping ore in a short time, and expect to keep the road open for the winter, as the show- ing in the mine will warrant it. Several cases of scarlet fever have developed in the past few days in Butte. One house with the scarlet fever placard on it is, in South Wash- ington street close to the Travonia school. 'The school may be closed by the health officers as; a measure of safety. Two children are down with the disease in this house and a third will in all probability be stricken also. Two carloads of ore were shipped from the Blue Bird to Butte during the week and three More are now being loaded. There is a large quantity of ore accumulated on thc.- dump at the mine, but the slowness with which cars are furnished by the Great Northern after they are ordered makes delay in shipments. There is a large force of men at work at the Muir tunnel clearing - away the debris and getting - it in shape to arch with brick. The burned timbers are being temporarily replaced. The timbering force is now ait work 700 feet in from the east and several hun- dred feet from the Bozeman side. The work proceeds slowly, as thestunnel is still hot and steaming. From the number of new suits of clothes that have arrived in Wickes, over the N. P., during the past two weeks it Would seem that all the boys are flush, and intend to begin the new year in an up-to-date style. Dur- ing the tyro weeks just past the N. Ile has opened up a hole thirty or forty feet square, uncovering a large. lead carrying a foot vein of ore that will assay very. high. The claim is known o a the Free Coinazes I Hank Merrill started in Monday morning to no assessment work on the Mary E. claim. He is running a cross- cut tunnel, which has been advanced 130 feet. It will pierce the lead at 180 feet. In years past this property has produced some very good ore, though owing to the smallness of the vein the. original locators 'abandoned it. Hank informs . us helms the utmost confidence that with depth the vein will widen to such an extent that the Mary E. will !be numbered with the leading pro- ducersc The Northern Pacific railroad. are preparing to put an agent in Corbin. No depot will be built, but for the time being the agent will have head- quarters ill the old company assay office. The office will be established about the 20th, and it is made stood that G. K.
