What is meant by \the fie -cc iit tha Minah being gradually reduced\ v,;e are •Q t loss ti ii :iderstaml„ During the •past summer there was a large force of carpenters and other mechan- ics'at work btiiltling' the immense mill and reduction plant which is the pride of the county. After. this was com- pleted the men were idoff, miners and skillet, mill men taking their places. These men were kept steadily NoRTHERN look rather poor. - The Ploxr.r.x has not, and will not at this time. attempt to institute any • 'boom\ tactics in Wickes. ft is not necessary. Figures do ,it lie, and there is not a -merchant in town whose books will dot show that business has increased -from 2= to Fri per Cent. in the past year. In one instanee there is a in marked crease of over 100 per cent. We Irisally been an the eamp six arm arc not :prepared to say at a very small cost. o what was dne in . .t.•ars past. My old The problem of \the regular hold back from the Alta\ will have to be solved by this coCrzspondent. We have approached a dozen or so mer- chants of Wickes on the subject and they are all at sea as to its meaning. The Alta comnanv is one of the most stable concerns ha the country, and are never behind in paying off its'em- ph-yes. They pay its men on or about the lOth of each month with checks, and these will be honored by any man doing business in this vicinity. The -town of Wickes is small, and employed until a few weeks since, when . , owing to the fact that a larger amount of ore was being preduced than the mill &Mild handle, a few miners were laid, off,. NN'e have it on good authority that the mill is a success, tilmmC s- men. who have been here for lre or I year. we are told that at the prese„at ti.ne basilic,. is better and the outlook inure prr • nlisittg than it has been in any year since the smeller closed down. . In the first place. this patriotic cor- responaen states that there are \plent- •idle buildings.\ The \plenty of idle buildings\ consists of •one store room which is unfit for occu- pancy. ..ne , n hos e owner cannot be fouti, and which will be sold in a short and that with the coming . of . spring its capacity will be .greatly increased, thereby giving employment to a large moniker of extra men. That there is only a small force some eight or tear men ehiployed at the Blue Bird nt , ine is admitted: but thiA second George Washington fails to state the reason for this. It -is not from lack of ore. The mine is all right, and the men working it could realize a large suin of money by re- linquistihttg ',kris - lease. •Hinkettrfore the lessees have, beeu handicapped by the lack of ready money wherewith to purchase machinery for tiperating the mine on a large scale. This difficulty has now been overcome. Twenty- seven car loads of ore have been shipped up to the present time. the proceeds of which went to purchase machinery that Is now being placed in position. Several extra men will be put to work next week. and from persons who are in a position to know we learn that with the coming of spring ten times the present force will heat work taking out ore. Thousand. of tons of ore have been uncovered and this can be mined time ;sr impa id taxes and another i were our merchasts to depend entirely whiclris in • lit iLiation. There is rtetOon it for support, many of them would be forted to the wall. Such is not the case. In this immediate vicinity there is a population of close to 2,(.100. All these do their trading in Wic,kes and so long as they canobtain satisfactory P COM cotitintlg to do so. In- the Gregory district there are a large num- ber of prospects being worked with satisfactory results. and by spring - many of them will take rank as pro- ducers. Every cent of this trade cinnes to Wickes. . Altogether, the business outIttok is brighter than it has beet, for a int umber of years. and any man who will prate about a dull and gloomy future has evidently slipped 44.. cog. We want no \boom\ here: but facts are facts. and it is a very poor prophet indeed who will says thrt in the pear future Wickes sail not take rank as the leading town of -Jefferson county. There is not an idle man in the camp. Can any town make the samv boast? an empty dwelling house in Wickes: if there weic(lltey could be rented within 1 -\qt hours. I We understand there is a couple matiimonially inclined who would.giv , a premium for a dwelling.) The next point which \Truthful Rents\ seeks to make is that the two general stores at Corbin. one at the Alta :tint one at Freyler'sranth Makes it unnecessary for the miners to dot much trading'elsewhere.
