Active steps are now being taken in organizing humane societies in Mon- tana. This is a good move, and the splendid work should not cease till every county in the state has such an organization, and the work should not end there. The societies should be active, and see that all cases of actual cruelty to dumb animals are prqsecu- ted. Tile organization of humane so- cieties is a move in the right direction and such societies . should have the moral aid of every good citizen. Kind- ness to the lower animals should be taught in the public schools, at the borne and in the churches. As man advances in civilization his love for all created beings should increase. Mon- tana is in need ,of humane societies. Let the work of organization continue. Another Alaska \Strike.\ Winter is rapidly approaching, and as business has been rather dull the past year, it is high time the transpor- tation companies doing business with Alaska, must get up some kind of ex- citement to stimulate 'passenger and freight traffic. Nome was the scene ot the last stampede, but that is worked out—nothing in booming that barren section. But the transportation people are resourceful. '1 hey always have something up their -sleeve, and at the opportune moment they are read4 to play the cards - and rake in the pot. - The latest \strike\ in Alaska is re- ported to be 200 miles from the Valdez, and up the Copper river. It is called the Nazina district, and it covers 200 miles square. Every creek bottom . is alive with old, and \the benches are just as good,\ so the reports say. That sounds familiar. We have heard ot these districts befetre. The latest strike is more than likely on a line with some of the others reported from time to time. It is estimated that $soo,000,000 have gone into Alaska, and if the truth were actually known, not one -fifth ot that amount, all told, has come out. Where one man has won foitune, five thousand have gone flat broke. The tenderfoot is \getting onto\ these -4* Alaska \strikes\ and they are not rush- ing northward as numerously as in former years. It can be taken for granted that the Copper river strike is a fake pure and simple, gotten up by inteiested parties. King Alfonso thinks he is a hot •number. He wants to marry an A me rica n , Kendall has as fine a emit of school children as can be found in the state. '[hat is a good deal to her credit. and with hard work they will win out. lendall's two oig mines will be steady producers of gold bullion all winter. There is something warming in that. They had an election in. Maine a few days ago. While September wea- ther prevailed it was a mighty cold day for the Democrats. s Leading Democrats admit that the Republican ticket in this county will be hard to beat. The Republicans are full or confidence and expect to make a clean sweep in Noyember. After all, Morgan has not got all the gold of the country. Uncle Sam has at present over $eoo,000,oco in his vaults. Your uncle is going to pull through the whiter all right For the next six weeks there will be a good deal of political talk. Don't knock a man down because he happens to differ with you. It may be he was born that 'Way, and can't help it. It is said the Boer generals are com- ing to the United States, and - will re- main several months. They will draw bigger crowds than did Buffalo Bill and his wild west mixture of absurdities. Governor McBride of Washington has been fighting for a railroad com- mission, and has won out. There was opposition to his plan, but he fought hard, and beat the railroad forces in the recent state convention. It is re.. Ireshing to find occasionally a , rrong man in public life. There are a good many dfferent kinds of Democrats in Montana; . a greater variety; in fact, than can be found in any other state. There are the Clark Democrats, the Amalgamated Democrats, the Heinze Democrats, the Toole . 'Democrats, and just plain Dem- ocrats. And they all have troubles of their own, troubles that the various D e mocratic organs -sseein unable to alleviate. A young couple of Binghampton, N. Y, fond of doing novel things, went up in a balloon to be married. A preacher, with the same bent of Irninci, accompanied them. The rope broke,' and when the trio were found some hours later in the soods, they . .were badly bruised and battered. The. tele-. graph does not state if the marriage took place. But kis certain the, cou- ple were cured of one habit, at least--; going up in a 'balloon to be married. Those who follow President Roose- velt in his speech making are able to catch a good many truths. The Presi- dent is one of the most practical of men. He believes in hard work, and he sets an example before his country- men of what earnest, persistent and in- telligent effort will accomplish. The l'resident has been a hard worker all his life. His motto seems to be thor- oughness. He goes at everything with enthusiasm. And it is this spirit that has made it' possible for him to be president.
