Kendall, Montana, October 7, 1902. 3. HAVE A SYSTEM It Requires A Big Bank Roll And Un- limited Nerve. What is now known as the Drake - Gates system ot betting, on horse races holds the attention of race fol- lowers. This comes after the alleged cleaning up of $600,000 by Chicago people on the win of Savable in the $60,000 Futurity at Sheepshead Bay re- cently. John A. Drake is credited with being the largest winner, including the $46,000 his horse won for him. Drake and Gates have carried into the thoroughbred game an unsurpass- ed bank roll, sound judgment, nerve and a love of simon-pure gambling. Their success is credited largely to a system of betting known and fig- ured at some time or other by every man or woman that has bet a horse race. It is credited also to the won- dertui trainer, Enoch Wishard, and to the information brought to Drake by other owners concerning the condi- tion of their horses in certain races. This latter information, of course, is handed to Drake for a consideration. That consideration may vary from a percentage of the money won or a cekain sum if it proves true to an exchange of tips, permitting the orig- inal owner to bet his own money. It was invariably noticed that Drake ana ins toilowers increased their wag- ers as they progresser on a losing ser- ies. In other wortls, they increased their bets sufficiently to clear up all past losses on each new bet. In the end a $40,000 plunge would be a bob. up winner, backed from ten to even money or better, according to wheth- er George Rose or Kid Weller was taking the money or whether it was spread over the local ring. This system is essentially the same as that outlined by hundreds of young men who have lacked the capital to make the start. Many have tried it with a small wad, only to bump up against short -priced winners, cheap bookies who wouldn't take a large bet or some such mishap, or they have not followed their system. Now comes these two big gambler%s of the period with unlimited capital, gained by ag- gressive, hard work in ventures as es- sentially of a gambling nature as play- ing the horse races. They plan out this system of taking either their own pickings or those of a regular tipster anu backing it till it wins. When a winner is picked they are right, for their bet covers all past losses. That is why the New York field, with 200 bookmakers inside the deadline and backed by a strong association, offer- ed a larger field than did Chicago, and that is why Drage and Gates are operating there. Drake is reported to have said: \Why doesn't everybody follow this system? It is a poor picker that doesn't name from one to three every day. We hive tried it and win.\ Yet this may be a certain little plunging of Drake's own game. He is said to be directly back of Joe Ull- man, who is running a book in the east, taking any and all such bets in any amount that bobs up. And these at odds so liberal that ot..er bookmax- ors of the close-fisted type gasp with astonishment. Is not Drake afraid that somebody will try his own system on his own hook? It is a poor rule that does not work both ways. It is to be taken for granted that the system proposed is not the broad and easy road to wealth generally con- sidered. In the first place, a vast betting capital or bank roll is needed; then a reputation as a steady better or plunger, such as drake has. Th,l . fr is to disabuse the bookmakers of- the idea that a sure thing is being put through. Nothing causes the average bookmaker to climb a fence as does a new face handing up a big bet to him on a horse that on past form looks outisde the money. In addition, it is necessary in most cases Where there is no Joe Ullman to take bets to have betting commis- sioners who can be trusted in suffi- cient number to flood a ring with $40,000 in small chunks. After all this outlay comes the demand for a little judgment in what tips to take and what horses to play; a judgment which, if accurate, and if put in legit- imate business, would make an hon-• orable name and fortune for a young man. The plunging game these latter days has developed into a business carried on with a capital up in the hundreds of thousands. \I will tell you about systems, Drake's or otherwise,\ said a well known bookmaker. \The fact is that v:aen a man follows a system and it breaks right for him he becomes a little prosperous, wants more money * than ever, and breaks away from his pl.:.ns. Then comes the hard luck that breaks him. A system has its smooth days and it also has its long, hard, discouraging, rough days, when * it looks all bad, and it is the bad days that keep the bookmakers from going broke.\ DATES OP REGISTRATION.
