2. Kendall, Montana, October 14, 1902 IN THE GOOD OLD TIMES. Many Things Were Lacking That Are Now Considered Neceesary for Comfort. People who talk of the good old timed should read these facts compiled by Popular Mechanics. 132 the good old times: There was not a public library in the United States. • Almost all the furniture was import- ed from England. An old copper mine in Connecticut was used as a prison. There was only one hat factory, and that made cocked hats. Virginia contained a fifth of the whole population of the country. A man who jeered at tift preacher or criticised the sermon was fined. A day laborer considered hirasell well paid with two shillings a day. The whipping post and pillory were still standing in New Yort and 130s - ton. Trousers were fastened with pegs or laces. The church collection was taken in:a bag at the end of a pole, with a bell attached to arouse the sleepy contrib- utors. A SUGGESTION OR TWO. Warm salt and water held in the mouth will sometimes banish tooth- ache, and at least make the affliction lighter. Get all the fresh air you can in the sleeping room, which should be' carefully screened in order that bugs may not come in. Inexpensive jute tapestrie, may be had in strong, rich colorings that make desirable summer hangings; the blue and green are especially good. Always keep olive oil in the . re frigerator and see that it is tightly corked. Never put more oil in the table cruet than two days supply It will grow. rancid. A great reversal of taste in house furnishings is predicted by a recog nized authority, and that soon. I is said that the dull finish, now Sc popular, will soon give way to ex treme color effects. • ' Floors that have been shellackee may be cleaned without injuring the polish by wiping over rapidly wit) clean cloths dipped in clear, warn water, to which kerosene has beer added in the proportion of a table spoonful to a pail of water.. WAY STATIONS. • In Belgium, for every four tons car ried by rail one ton is carried by canal The United States exported last year the record number of $05 locomotives England was the first Europeas country to have a railway (182$), Ser via the last (1884). Fifteen Swiss railway and seven lake steamship companies now issue join tickets serving the purpose pf a free pass for two weeks or longer over al Kendall Stage. Co.
