Graff, Butte manager of the Postal Telegraph company, is ; pleased° ver the fact that his com- pany is the first in the field to adopt ! the wireless method of sending mes- sages. Mr. Graff says the Marconi Wireless Telegraph company has completed arrangements for the send- ing of messages to incoming steamers for the Posial Telegraph company. All that will be necessary in order to send a wireless message to any one on an incoming steamer will be to fill out a blank at any Postal Tele- graph office and without extra coat station at Sagaponack, L. I., which is the main station controlling the At- lantic at • present. Another station will be opened at Cape Cod early in April. General Manager Bottomly, of the Marconi company, said of the new telegraphy: \We are not soliciting any business at present, as we have not yet per- fected our system, but all messages that are sent to us will be attended to. The cable company charges 25 cents a word, whereas we will charge but 40 cents. We now have instruments on the steamers Lucina, Campania, Eturia, Umbria, Philadelphia, Kaiser Wilhelm, Minnehaha and La Savoie.\ It is believed that the new station at Cape Cod would probably be finish- ed in about a month and that direct wireless 431egraph1e communication between the United States and Corn- wall, ngland, would then be opened. Thee verage cost per word across the Atlantic by cable is 25 cents. An officer of the Marconi company said this morning that the company could transmit messages across the Atlan- tic tor 10 cents a word and make money. This officer dwelt apon.some of the possibilities of the wireless system. Besides answering every purpose of the cable or telegraph, he s.lid teat It nad many additional ad- vantages. Steamships fitted with the nec essary apparatus . could keep in constant communication with the shore and in many places where it was impossible to string telegraph *titres or lay cables the wireless sys- tem would be of invaluable use. Messages can be sent overland as well as by water by the wireless zys- tem, as successful experiments in Europe have demonstrated. Signor, Marconi is expected in New York early 'In January. According to the Platte of the company work on the Cape Cod station will then be rushed to completion. For the pres- ent the company does not intend to do anything on the Pacific coast. BIG DREDGING PROPOSITION Seven Miles of Creelit Med In the Big Hole Basin l• Mob In Gold It Is expected that a dredge boat will be instil/led in the Big Hole ba- sin the coming summer to work some promising placer properties near the battleground. Those who are familiar witn the ground say that the gravel will average thirty-five cents a yard. Seven miles of creek bed in this vi- cinity has been acquired by a dredg- ing concern that has been operating in the Moose Creek section in Idaho. It is understood that several Butte men are interested in the company and It is also said that the ground is being thoroughly prospected this winter with a view to establising the dredge boat there next summer. The concern which has the devel- oping of the property in view has been working the deep gravel of Idaho with great success and the su- perintendent of the boat, who visited Butte several weeks ago is of the opinion that the placer ground In the Big Hole will prove to be an Ideal dredging proposition.
